The latest addition to Sony’s RC Series is their Flagship Blu-ray desktop making it the ultimate HD-capable platform for A/V editing and streaming. Powered by an awesome 3.2GHz Pentium-D Processor supported by a generous 1GB of Ram this is the ultimate home media centre. With extensive connectivity, integrated DVB-T tuner and two huge 300GB hard drives this sleek and stylish desktop will meet all your multimedia needs. Pre installed with Windows XP Media Edition it also comes with an infrared remote control enabling full control over data and streaming content from afar.

The Sony Vaio VGC-RC204 is the first PC to come equipped with a Blu-ray disc drive. The long-awaited optical format allows dozens of gigabytes of data to be stored on a single disc the same size as an ordinary DVD. This makes the RC204 a hugely attractive prospect for anyone with the need to create large backups, but it’ll need an upgrade to Windows Vista to play full high-definition Blu-ray movies. At around £1,700 (if you shop around online), it’s surprisingly good value for Sony.

The desktop that brings professional graphics and audio standards into the studio, the office and the home - that’s the VAIO RC-Series. With everything needed to record, edit and stream high-definition video quickly and easily, it’s the automatic first choice for high-quality media work.

Given the level of confusion currently surrounding Blu-ray, HD DVD and HDTV, early adopters are being seen as either forward-thinking geniuses or consumers with more money than sense. And if you need proof that high-definition content isn’t ripe for the mass market yet, just look at the prices. But, while a glance at the RC204’s price (or that of its mobile cousin the VAIO AR11S) does little to dispel the notion of Blu-ray as being expensive and niche, the RC-204 is an impressive attempt to produce a cutting-edge media centre.

The Vaio RC204 looks the same as the rest of the Vaio RC series. It has a large, predominantly black chassis with a silver central section bearing a backlit Vaio logo. This section houses the RC204’s hard drives in a metal enclosure. You won’t need to open the main section of the case to access the hard drives, but you’ll still need a screwdriver to remove them, which is disappointing. A toolless design would have been infinitely more welcome.
