The Dell Dimension E510 looks like its glossy-white, high-class XPS brethren and offers many of the same features found on the XPS 400 and more options than what you’ll find on the slim XPS 200. What you don’t get is the XPS-specific support; you’ll be on hold along with the rest of Dell’s customers when you call the toll-free desktop support number. The Dimension E510 lies in the middle of Dell’s overall desktop offerings; it headlines the Dimension line, but it’s still a notch below the XPS models.

Dell’s Dimension E510 offers a very unique double layer of data protection with their DataSafe features, but beyond this the system doesn’t have much to offer those that can’t be found in other systems for less.

The E510’s BTX case and single fan keep the system running cool and quiet. With a clean, understated elegance, the silver and black case sports conveniently placed ports and an easy-to-open case for those wanting to fiddle around inside. The case is designed specifically to have a healthy airflow, allowing the higher-end components inside to have some breathing room.

The system offers seven USB 2.0 ports–two on the front and five on the rear–and our custom Dell multimedia keyboard offered another two; however, you won’t find a single FireWire port, which strikes us as bizarre. More bizarre: a FireWire card isn’t even listed as an option. The slight software bundle includes Musicmatch Jukebox Basic and Corel Photo Album Starter Edition.

The Dell Dimension E510 is powered by the Intel® Pentium® 4 6xx and Pentium D Dual core Series processors and controlled by the Genuine Windows® XP operating system. This means that you get a great desktop PC that can quickly and easily handle your productivity and multimedia applications without slowing down. Whether you’re into music, gaming or photography, the E510 will help you get the most out of your favorite hobby.

With the advent of dual-core CPUs, PCs have gained more processing power than ever before. A dual-core machine has two computing cores in one processor package, which allows the system to efficiently work on more than one task at a time. Our WorldBench 5 benchmark’s multitasking test has shown us that dual-core processors prove especially useful when the computer is running two taxing programs. Dual-core processors also boost the performance of multithreaded software, though relatively few applications are written this way. (WorldBench 5 includes the multithreaded Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator and Windows Media Encoder.) You can expect to see more multithreaded applications, such as multimedia programs and games, in the months to come.
