Enjoy having digital entertainment at your fingertips with the VAIO UX Micro PC. So small and lightweight, this full-functioning PC is designed for productivity on the go. With a 4.5 wide SVGA screen, Intel Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage CPU and Microsoft XP Professional operating system, as well as integrated wireless LAN, wireless WAN and Bluetooth technology built right in.

Innovative, lightweight design; intuitive user interface; attached keyboard; two built-in cameras; plenty of ports and connections; screen resolution is great for watching movies.
The Sony VAIO UX is one of the best tiny tablets we’ve seen, but its high price, poor battery life, and less-than-ideal typing experience keep it from being a home run.

Sony is the Apple of the Windows PC world. Sometimes the two companies serve different groups of users; sometimes the same groups. But, without any doubt, they are running neck-and-neck as the most innovative consumer electronics manufacturers in the world. Long before Windows XP Media Center Edition existed, Sony offered a complete line of multimedia capable Windows desktop PCs. Though it has lost some its luster in the personal music player market to Apple and others, Sony still offers a solid line of such products. And, when it comes to smaller laptop and sub-laptop PCs, Sony is way ahead of the game.

Thus far the UMPC concept has been just that, a concept. The hardware has been less than compelling, as manufacturers worry more about price point than producing something people want. To be fair, I enjoyed the Samsung Q1 at times and think it has a future with certain niche markets. Now Sony has come out with a second or third attempt at the UMPC market, depending on how you count their machines, and in typical Sony way, paid less attention to price than to features and functionality. Where the Samsung Q1 skimped, Sony splurged, releasing the most full featured UMPC, or Micro PC as they call it, to date. Say hello to the Sony Vaio UX180P.

Ergonomically, the Vaio is a delight, and that’s something I rarely say (the Treo is the only other device to receive that honor). Sony claimed their engineers worked long and hard to make the device eminently usable, and they succeeded (perhaps they borrowed some of the design engineers who make their game controllers and the PSP). It’s not just that it feels so good in the hand, but the controls are intuitive and easy to use. Par for the course with Sony, you don’t get printed guide that tells you what everything is (that is not a good thing). Use this device for 5 minutes and you’ve figured out what all the buttons do, and you’re enjoying how they lay in just the right places to reach easily and how they improve on the device’s overall usability (the good part).
