The Acer Aspire 9400 and 9410 support Intel Pentium M and Core Duo notebooks respectively, using the 945GM and 915PM chipsets. Video performance is provided by Nvidia’s GeForce Go7300 GPU featuring 64MB of dedicated GDDR2 memory, but can share an additional 192MB of system memory via TurboCache. Each model comes with up to 120GB of hard drive space, dual-channel DDR2 RAM, and DVD burners.
The 17in widescreen display offers sharp definition and eye-catching colours. The resolution of 1,440×900 isn’t as high as 17in screens go. It’s adequate, but the graphics setup leaves a little to be desired. The GeForce Go 7300 controller borrows some system memory but doesn’t produce lightning frame rates in return.
The wide chassis accommodates a numeric keypad to the side of the keyboard, while 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi facilities and an ethernet port mean the 9410 can easily hook up to wired and wireless networks. It’s still quite chunky at 3.7kg and 40cm wide, but it’s intended as a desktop replacement and you won’t have trouble moving between rooms. The 9410 is bundled with Acer’s proprietary Arcade software package. This, in essence, adds media-centre functionality.

The 17in WXGA Crystalbrite TFT display performs well and can support a screen resolution of up to 1,440×900. Beyond regular Windows usage, it comes into its own when you’re watching a DVD movie or browsing through a slideshow of photos.
Playing games with this monitor is a real treat. As far as graphics are concerned, the 9410 can play Far Cry at a comfortable frame rate of 31fps (frames per second).

This 40cm x 30cm x 4cm notebook spearheads Acer’s latest foray into the 17″ notebook market. It comes with enough power underneath the hood to handle several tasks simultaneously without any performance drop, but is not powerful enough to be a true desktop replacement nor a gaming machine.

Acer’s Aspire 9410 is a nicely presented and solidly built laptop, but its range of features are relatively basic. There’s plenty to appreciate however, such as the crisp display, large keyboard and capacious HDD, but the lack of a few fundamentals such as FireWire and DVI make you wonder who exactly the machine is pitched at. For instance, it’s too big and heavy for frequent business travellers, lack of top-end multimedia features will turn off graphics/video editors, and the so-so graphics chipset is a joke for 3D gamers.
