Enjoy studio-quality sound with the Z-5500 Digital Speaker System from Logitech®. This THX®-certified 500 Watt speaker system gives you 5.1 surround sound for clear and crisp sound. It features a large, 10″ long-throw subwoofer driver with flared bass port that delivers 188 watts of thunderous bass. With digital equalization, this speaker system actively adjusts frequency response in real time for clean and accurate sound reproduction

With the past release of their Z-series line of performance and mainstream two channel and surround speaker systems, Logitech has built up quite a consumer following who just love their quality, workmanship and surprising power contained within their reasonably priced audio products. In the past we had the opportunity of reviewing their Logitech Z-640 5.1 Computer Speaker System and the Logitech Z2200 THX Certified 2.1 Speaker System and had a hard time constantly picking our jaws up off of the floor when we cranked the volume and the pictures started vibrating off of the wall.

    * Powerful, distortion-free bass: The new, larger 10-inch long-throw subwoofer driver with flared bass port delivers 188 watts of thunderous bass.
    * Innovative driver technology: Polished aluminum phase-plug satellites combine two drivers into one–the clarity of a tweeter with the richness and fullness of a separate mid-range.
    * Digital equalization: The Z-5500 Digital actively adjusts frequency response in real time for the cleanest, most accurate sound reproduction.
    * DTS® 96/24 support: Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Z-5500’s support for 96 kHz / 24-bit digital audio streams
    * Amazingly powerful controls: The Digital SoundTouch™ Control Center lets you control volume to all speakers, set inputs, and much more. And the separate wireless remote is great for home theaters and video game consoles.
    * Innovative satellite design: Cloth grilles are removable for a pro-audio look. Pedestals rotate for easy wall mounting or desk placement. Center channel can be mounted on wall, above or below monitor.
    * Connect to multiple sources: Simultaneously connect 6 audio sources including PCs, video game consoles, and DVD, CD & portable music players… and control it all from the Digital SoundTouch™ Control Center.

    Digital SoundTouch™ Control Center

    * Digital LCD: Clear, crisp high contrast display
    * Input: Select audio source (optical, coax, or direct)
    * Effect: Select digital surround sound effect
    * Settings: Adjust parameters of digital surround sound effects
    * Mute: Mute the entire system
    * Level: Adjust volume, subwoofer, center, and fader levels

  • Linksys WAP54G 802.11b/g Wireless Access Point Review
By PCMAN on November 29th, 2006 | No Comments Comments

    tn_b120751.jpg

Wireless-G is the 54Mbps wireless networking standard that’s almost five times faster than Wireless-B (802.11b) products - but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band,
Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment. The Linksys Wireless-G Access Point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Access Point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC Address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network.

    * Add high-speed Wireless-G access to your wired home or office network
    * Data rates up to 54Mbps in Wireless-G (802.11g) mode, or 11Mbps in Wireless-B (802.11b)
    * Advanced wireless security with 256-bit WPA encryption and MAC filtering
    * Free trial of maximum security Linksys Wireless Guard WPA-RADIUS service

The good news is that the access point allows you to alter just about every parameter relating to 802.11g/b settings. It’s just that the Netcomms wouldn’t connect. I half blame the Netcomms, because other ancient 802.11b cards connect without problems, but there’s something funny about the Linksys that makes it difficult for them to connect - they have no problems with other 802.11b/g access points - even my neighbour’s unprotected wireless cable modem!

It supports WPA, WEP, SSID hiding, MAC filtering, and easily supports setting up a secure wireless hotspot - ideal if you already have a broadband router, and just want to add wireless. Just beware if you have certain older 802.11b adaptors - they may not work with the Linksys.

    Review By Pcmag

Output quality is more than acceptable, with an excellent rating for text, and ratings for graphics and photos just below the best available for color lasers. (All three ratings are the same for the 2400W.) Text quality is good enough for any purpose, with more than half of our test fonts easily readable at 4 points, and only one highly stylized font requiring 8 points. Graphics earned a rating at the high end of good, making them just good enough to use for potential clients you want to impress. The only problem worth mentioning is a tendency for white lines to show at the edges of objects, such as the slices in a pie chart.

The two-tone gray HP Color LaserJet 2600n measures a compact 16 by 18 by 15 inches (WDH). Two sturdy handgrips in its base make this 40-pound machine easy to move. In order to keep production costs down, HP cut corners in ways that are difficult to forgive. For example, the control panel on the top-right corner of the machine features a tiny two-line LCD that’s hard to read because it’s set at an awkward angle and lacks backlighting. The control panel provides buttons to move across the menus and drill down through them, but not to climb back up; so after setting a menu item, you have to jump back to the starting point. In other words, to save money on a plastic button, HP designed a control panel that accesses only one menu item at a time.

  • Pantone’s Huey Monitor Calibration Review
By PCMAN on November 25th, 2006 | No Comments Comments

    tn_124911-2405p058-1b.jpg

The first step in managing color is to calibrate and profile your monitor to ensure that it displays color accurately and consistently. Until now, that’s been a headache for amateur photographers and other non-professionals who want to avoid the cost and learning curve associated with high-end calibration systems. Now, along comes Pantone’s huey , a small, portable USB device designed for consumers that takes the pain and expense out of calibrating and profiling both LCD and CRT monitors.

During calibration, huey measures the ambient room light, determines the way your monitor displays color, and adjusts the monitor to standard settings—all in a matter of minutes. Optimize these adjustments for the tasks you perform most often, choosing from presets like Web Browsing and Photo Editing, Graphic Design and Video Editing, or Gaming. These settings adjust your monitor’s white point and gamma behind the scenes. For example, the Web Browsing and Photo Editing preset automatically sets the white point to 6500° Kelvin and the gamma to 2.2.

    Key features:

    * Corrects monitor color
    * Designed for snapshooters and hobbyists
    * Colorimeter is easy to set up
    * Softare holds your hand through process
    * Adjusts for different uses–image editing, gaming, etc.
    * Automatically adjusts for changes in room light

    Review By Dpnow

Pantone can’t really escape from the comment that the huey has a rather gimmicky side to it. But that’s forgivable if it does its job adequately and, on the whole, I can happily report that it does. I tested the huey on no less than eight monitors; seven LCDs and one CRT and on all but one, which happened to be the lowest specification LCD, a good result was obtained. Even though I couldn’t satisfactorily use the contrast and brightness wizard for the CRT monitor calibration process, the result using default settings was still very acceptable. We did notice an occasional aborted calibration for no apparent reason, requiring an exit from the software and a re-start from the beginning.

To date, advanced electronic monitor calibrators have cost several hundred dollars, putting them out of reach for semi-professionals and hobbyists,” said Doug Meisner, senior product manager for Corel. “huey offers high-quality performance at a truly affordable price, and is a perfect companion to Paint Shop Pro, which for years has been the renowned choice for photographers who want a professional-level tool at a non-professional price. We have tested huey with Paint Shop Pro X and it works seamlessly with PSP’s color management features to let users take their passion for photography to the next level.”

Setup is simple through the basic software, which offers few adjustable settings. You change color temperature and contrast by selecting one of nine presets, several of which are optimized for specific situations such as photo viewing and gaming. Just stick the Huey sensor on your screen, and help the software along with an occasional mouse click as it flashes a series of color and gray patches on screen for the sensor to read.

The Huey is a small 10cm long device that comes with a stand, USB extension lead, software CD and pack of screen cleaner.
The picture shows the device at almost life size.

The sensor clips into the stand, and is used in this configuration to detect changes in room lighting.

One feature not mentioned in the (brief) literature supplied with the device, is that the base can hold the cable and USB plug underneath.

    Review By Adorama

HUEY consists of a stick-like thingie, called a Colorimeter, which attaches to your computer monitor (LCD or CRT) via eight little suction cups; a holder for the Colorimeter; and a CD with the accompanying software. The unit connects to the computer via a USB cable, and will calibrate an LCD or CRT monitor, and will work on both desktop and laptop computers. There is also a monitor cleaning wipe cloth; if there is dust on the monitor, the Colorimeter might not attach properly.

    Review By xyzcomputing

Looking at the X1300 XT it becomes clear just how closely this is related to the X1600 cards. All of the IceQ modesl feature the same cooling: a large fan with an aluminum heatsink and small memory coolers. This card is no different and it also uses the same red PCB that HIS has adopted across the IceQ lineup. The one noticeable difference between the X1300 and some older models is that it uses dual DVI output, which reflects the huge increase in the number of digital monitors being used today.

ATi has just released their fall refresh of video cards in the form of the x1950XT, the x1650 Pro, and the x1300XT. The only card here that can be considered ‘newer’ is the x1950, as ATi has started to use GDDR4 memory on this card. The x1650 Pro is basically the x1600XT and the x1300XT is the x1600.

HIS has been known as a partner for ATi cards for quite a while. In fact we here at Viperlair have reviewed quite a few of their cards, from the lower end to the high end cards. One thing that comes into your mind when you mention an HIS card is the quite and efficient coolers that they put on their video cards.

ATI’s reference design specs the X1650 Pro’s GPU speed at 600MHz, a full 100MHz faster than the X1600 Pro which runs at 500MHz. However, HIS took things a step further, and raised the GPU clock an additional 25MHz, to a default speed of 625MHz. We should note, however, that when the card was installed in our test system, we did find the clock speeds to be slightly lower than advertised. In actuality, the GPU runs at 621MHz while the GDDR3 memory was clocked at 688.5MHz (1.37GHz DDR).

This is due to the Radeon X700XT featuring higher memory and core clock frequencies. The card will feature a 475MHz core and a 1.05GHz DDR memory frequency. This is opposed to the Radeon X700 Pro which features a core clock of just 425MHz and a memory clock of 864MHz. However, the Radeon X700XT has been difficult to track down and therefore consumers have been turning to the far more popular Radeon X700 Pro.

  • Hawking Technology HNC290G Wireless-G Network Camera Review
By PCMAN on November 23rd, 2006 | No Comments Comments

    tn_hawkinghnc290gcameraq.jpg

The Hawking Technology HNC290G Wireless-G Network Camera gives peace of mind to any homeowner. Unlike a webcam that attaches to your laptop over USB, this network camera uses an 802.11b/g network and feeds a 640 x 480-pixel video signal (sans audio) back to your PC.

The Setup Wizard features DDNS and UPnP technology, which allow for automatic router port opening and custom domain assignment for remote viewing over the Web.

The 4.9 x 4.1 x 4.1-inch device is less bulky than pan-tilt-zoom cams we’ve tested. Video looked good, but not great; the feed was slightly washed out but still passable for an Internet camera.

The motion-sensing feature worked perfectly, automatically recording a video snippet and sending a still image via e-mail. While not exactly home-movie quality, the HNC290G is definitely good enough to let you see an intruder or a flooded basement.

    Review By Hawkingtech

The HNC290G supports both the Wireless 802.11b/g and 10/100Mbps Wired Fast Ethernet standards, and can stream high-quality live video at up to 30 frames per second. Unique to the entry-level network camera segment is the HNC290G’s built-in motion detection feature, which adds an extra measure of security by allowing users to set up automatic recording and snapshot emailing when motion is detected. Included with the camera is a powerful management and control software application from which users can playback video, record directly to the hard drive, and trigger automatic recording via motion detection.

The feather-light Wireless DJ remote has a bright LCD that allows you to perform two main tasks: play songs stored on your PC and create playlists. Streaming music from your PC to your stereo should be all pleasure and no pain, which is why we like the Logitech Wireless DJ Music System. For those who can live with limited range, this is one of the best music streamers on the market.

The Wireless DJ consists of three major parts: a USB transmitter that plugs into your PC, a receiver/charging cradle that plugs into your home stereo (via the included RCA cables) and is powered by an AC adapter, and a handheld remote with a built-in rechargeable battery. The system uses adaptive frequency-hopping to avoid interference, but Logitech recommends placing the receiver and transmitter as far as possible from potential sources of 2.4-GHz interference (including Wi-Fi components, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and microwave ovens) to maximize the effective range.
