The Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB hard drive offers many of the standard features of a high-end model, such a 7200-RPM spindle speed, an average latency of 4.16 ms, and 16MB of segmented data cache. This 750 GB drive also utilizes the latest SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface and has support for NCQ (Native Command Queuing). Most of these specs are consistent through the 7200.10 SATA line, but with Seagate offering both 8MB and 16MB drives at the same capacity.
The drive also offers features like Perpendicular Recording (increased areal density). Adaptive Fly Height (more consistent read/write performance), Clean Sweep (automatic drive calibration), Directed Offline Scan (diagnostics when idle), Seagate SoftSonic (quiet operation), and Enhanced G-Force Protection (protects against handling damage).
The overall design of the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB hard drive is standard, and virtually identical to the various Barracuda 7200.8 and 7200.9 models. The drive back plate includes Serial ATA power and data connectors, and like other Seagate drives, there are no Molex power connectors or other legacy ports available. The top of the drive housing is silver with the Seagate model number and specs, along with a diagram for the SATA power and data connectors, and jumpers.
Seagate Barracuda Features:
* Highest capacity in a single drive - up to 750 GB of digital storage space
* The first 3.5″ drive to support Vertically stored data bits, enabling industry leading capacity in existing standard form factors
* A range of options from 8 or 16 MB cache to interface choices of ATA/100, SATA 1.5Gb/s or SATA 3Gb/s to meet your specific needs
* Seagate SoftSonic motor enables whisper quiet operation
* Enhanced G-Force Protection defends against handling damage
* Unprecedented 5-Year warranty
* Family capacity from 200GB to 750 GB
* Maximum sustained data transfer rate: 78 Mb/s
* Operating shock: 68 Gs

Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.10 750GB drive, the largest hard drive to date, sets new high-water marks for capacity, price, and performance. Its speed was especially notable on the PC World Test Center’s write tests, where it came within a hair’s breadth of matching Western Digital’s swift 10,000-rpm Raptor X.
The Barracuda 7200.10 drive that our test center evaluated has 16MB of cache and supports SATA-150 by default, out of the box. We tested it using SATA-300, which required a jumper-setting change.

Now, Seagate is shipping its 7200.10 series, including a suite of products that differ only in the amount of buffer available or in the disk interface. SATA 3Gbps drives include the ST3750640AS, offering a 16MB cache, while the ST3750840AS ships with 8MB. Also available are the ST3750640A and ST3750840A, which are the 16MB and 8MB parallel ATA versions, respectively. Other models are available in lesser capacities, including 500, 400, 320, 300, 250 and 200GB models. Platter densities may vary somewhat, with the flagship 750GB drives packing In 187.5GB per platter, while the 200GB drive is a single-platter design.

Each time your PC is switched on, the Clean Sweep feature will fine-tune your drive, maintaining both media and drive reliability. Adaptive Fly Height maintains the distance between disc head and platter, based on fluctuations in environmental operating conditions. The Seagate SoftSonic Motor facilitates noiseless operations, while the Enhanced G-Force Protection prevents data corruption. In short, you have a set of features designed to ensure that your precious data will stay safe for a long time to come.

Traditionally, hard drive manufacturers have been shrinking data bits more and more and packing them closer and closer together in order increase areal density in longitudinal recording. However, there are disadvantages and limits to shrinking bits and crowding them closer. Currently, the answer to reaching the next levels of areal density is perpendicular recording because more bits can be packed in each square inch. Perpendicular recording will enable a five-fold increase in capacity over today’s drives that use longitudinal recording. That means 2TB 3.5″ drives for desktops, 500GB 2.5″ drives for laptops and 50GB 1″ drives for MP3 players.

The ES version has enhanced RAID performance which includes: Error Recovery Control, workload and power management, Write Same, and One-Step Download. Other built-in feautures from Seagate are Signal Integrity analysis, power and thermal profiling, rotational vibration analysis, and performance benchmarking. Most of these features are designed for the enterprise level, or at least this is where they will be most appreciated. For example workload management is used to lower the Barracuda’s temperature when the drive is thermally stressed and advanced power management can be enacted to reduce drive power consumption.
