Wireless-G is the 54Mbps wireless networking standard that’s almost five times faster than Wireless-B (802.11b) products - but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band,
Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment. The Linksys Wireless-G Access Point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Access Point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC Address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network.
* Add high-speed Wireless-G access to your wired home or office network
* Data rates up to 54Mbps in Wireless-G (802.11g) mode, or 11Mbps in Wireless-B (802.11b)
* Advanced wireless security with 256-bit WPA encryption and MAC filtering
* Free trial of maximum security Linksys Wireless Guard WPA-RADIUS service
The good news is that the access point allows you to alter just about every parameter relating to 802.11g/b settings. It’s just that the Netcomms wouldn’t connect. I half blame the Netcomms, because other ancient 802.11b cards connect without problems, but there’s something funny about the Linksys that makes it difficult for them to connect - they have no problems with other 802.11b/g access points - even my neighbour’s unprotected wireless cable modem!
It supports WPA, WEP, SSID hiding, MAC filtering, and easily supports setting up a secure wireless hotspot - ideal if you already have a broadband router, and just want to add wireless. Just beware if you have certain older 802.11b adaptors - they may not work with the Linksys.

With its potential for high bandwidth and its backward compatibility with existing 802.11b networks, the Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G access point represents the next step in wireless networking. However, this next step may not be as big as the vendors lead you to believe. First of all, like all upcoming 802.11g products, the WAP54G is 802.11g-draft-compliant, but the IEEE still must ratify the new wireless-networking standard. And while the WAP54G promises speeds of 54Mbps and backward compatibility with 802.11b radios, we found these claims somewhat misleading.
