For the Gamer’s Choice version of the Ultimate X9, ABS only offers the two current Intel Core 2 Extreme processors. The newest is the quad core QX6700 model. This version offers better multitasking performance but overall it is slightly slower for most games as the game companies haven’t moved over to the multi-threaded code yet. To save a little cash, gamers might be better suited by the older Core 2 Extreme QX6800 that offers better gaming performance but slightly lower multimedia performance.

The Gigabyte 3D Aurora is a sleek aluminum case without a lot of cheap plastics that you typically find on many cases. The design was intended for enthusiasts and gamers. A single 120-mm fan draws air in the bottom over the dual 150 GB Western Digital Raptors configured in RAID 0. Air moves past the hard drives to the two ATI Radeon X1900 graphics cards in CrossFire. The cards are designed to pull air from inside the case and expel it out the back.

The system comes loaded with all the top-of-the-line parts currently available: Intel Core 2 Extreme, X1900 XT CrossFire, 2×1024MB of Corsair RAM, 2×150GB Western Digital Raptor hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration, and it’s topped off with a water-cooled CPU and graphics cards. You can configure your own specific system on the ABS web site, but they sent us their maximum performance configuration for review. This particular configuration further improves performance by overclocking the Core 2 Extreme processor an extra 20%, resulting in out of box performance faster than just about any other retail system on the market.

The water-cooling system isn’t the only impediment to future expansion. The X9’s two large graphics cards block the open PCI Express slots, leaving only one vacant PCI slot accessible. The water pipes run through two holes in the case to the radiator on the back, which makes reaching the USB 2.0 and other ports on the back rather awkward.

ABS is one of the few smaller PC vendors that sells PCs with any sort of brand consistency. Its Ultimate line of gaming desktops (its only line) is subdivided by a logical number scheme. The Ultimate 9 III that ABS sent us for review is the top end of its gaming PCs. Your only CPU option is Intel’s Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU, and while you have a few choices for graphics cards, if you want two of them, you have to go with CrossFire, as in the ATI Radeon X1900 XT CrossFire configuration sent to us. ABS also included its aggressive overclocking package, facilitated by one of the more outlandish water-cooling systems we’ve ever seen
