The Q30 has a 1.1GHz Ultra Low Voltage CPU using Intel Centrino technology and 2MB of Level 2 cache; it will perform well with standard applications and software, but will struggle with software using complex graphics such as games or multimedia applications. Storage is a 40GB hard drive which is respectable for such a portable machine, and if you find disk space becoming an issue Samsung have bundled an external DVD/CDRW drive for archiving, back-ups, as well as playing CDs or DVDs. A great feature is the 3 in 1 Memory Card Slot that reads SD, MMC and Memory Sticks and there is a separate CompactFlash card reader.

The Q30 is WiFi ready, supporting 802.11b and 802.11g standards and has USB 2.0 x 2 and Firewire connectivity; on the downside however Infrared and Bluetooth are not supported and there is not a slot for a PC card, but if you can live without these functions you will have a light, compact, stylish laptop that you can take with you without becoming too much of a burden.

Like so many notebooks these days, the Q30 is finished in matt silver, but the colour really suits the slim form factor. There’s a single Samsung logo in the centre of the lid - it’s thankfully correctly orientated so that it’s the right way up when the lid is open. The top edge of the lid also sports the curious phrase “DIGITall FREEDOM”. Open up the lid and you’re greeted with a surprisingly large and well laid out keyboard. The keys are a good size and have a decent amount of travel, along with a solid break that springs your finger back up for the next key strike. The Shift, Caps Lock, Return and Backspace keys are all large, and even though the Fn key is in the bottem left where the Ctrl key should be, Samsung has made the Ctrl key larger, so it’s still pretty easy to get to.

Design partially is a question of taste. Nevertheless probably many will agree, that the Samsung Q30 looks condemned well. But not only that. The Q30 is completely manufactured of Magnesium and finished excellently. Uneven gap dimensions, crunching with pressure or a possible flexing of the case can’t be found.

The case is extremely stiff against torsions and leads to the wish of permanent carrying of the notebook. Also the display is sufficiently rigid despite its slim design.

The use of flash memory will allow the computers to enjoy several advantages, according to Samsung. Perhaps the most significant, according to the company, is that the Q30-SSD will operate in complete silence, lacking the quiet chatter of the hard drive or even a processor fan. The Q30 will include a 1.2-GHz Intel Celeron M 753, which will likely be passively cooled.

Using Flash NAND for storage means better battery life and faster data access. Samsung claims that Windows XP will boot up to 50 percent faster on the Q30, and that data access (rated 53MBps) will be up to three times faster than using a hard drive. The write speed is 28MBps, which Samsung claims is a 50 percent improvement. Your tradeoff is a lower storage capacity for the subnotebook, with most such devices now shipping with at least 40GB or 60GB of storage capacity.

The full-size keyboard is very comfortable to type on and the 12.1in widescreen display easy on the eye. As an Intel Centrino machine it has inbuilt 802.11g wireless, plus two USB2 and a Firewire port.

It also has slots for SD, Memory Stick/Pro and Compact Flash cards. But it does not have a PC Card slot.
