Aside from the outdated processor, the fixed-configuration Presario SR2050NX features an impressive list of specs for a budget PC, including 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB SATA hard drive, and a double-layer LightScribe DVD burner. The system relies on integrated graphics, courtesy of the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset. The chipset supports dual-channel memory, but unfortunately, the Presario SR2050NX doesn’t take advantage of it because it uses a single 1GB DIMM rather than a pair of 512MB sticks. The motherboard features not four but two memory slots, which isn’t uncommon for a low-end PC.

The SR2050NX comes in the same sort of black-and-silver minitower case that has housed the Compaq Presario SR series in the past. It has a decent amount of room inside for expansion, with space for a couple more hard drives, another optical drive, one more unit of RAM DIMM, and slots for one PCIe x16 card and two regular PCI cards. Upgrade options are plentiful.

The CD/DVD burner will burn a music CD in about 7 to 8 minutes; a DVD takes about twice as long (longer for dual layer, which we have not tried yet). Burning is easy through Sonic, but we have just as easily burned discs with Rhapsody, Jukebox, and iTunes. We do like the Lightscribe technology, which allows you to burn a label directly onto blank CDs bearing the Lightscribe logo. You simply flip the disc over and run the special software, and in twenty minutes a custom burned label graces your disc.
