  • Dell Latitude D600 PC Notebook Review
By PCMAN on February 14th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

    0,1425,sz=1&i=73557,00.jpg

The Dell Latitude D600 is a solid business system with good features and components: a 1.8-GHz Pentium M 745, 512MB of RAM, 802.11g wireless, a DVD burner, and an 80GB hard drive. But when we matched it up against the competition, we found that other notebooks here offer more performance for less money.

The 5.4-pound D600 has a clean design with a comfortable full-size keyboard, both a pointing stick and a touch pad, and a crisp 14.1-inch SXGA+ display. It also includes two USB ports, a PC Card slot, and, surprisingly, a DVD+RW drive. Located right below the PC Card slot is a smart-card reader for added security.

The D600 performed worse than expected on our tests: 17.6 on Business Winstone and 21.3 on Multimedia Content Creation Winstone. Though these scores are below par for this kind of notebook, they are adequate for typical users. What’s more disappointing is the D600’s score of 3:03 on BatteryMark—second to last in this category.

Dell offers several docking stations and port replicators that are compatible across the entire D line, as is the AC adapter. The OS image is not common across the D line, though many of the drivers (like modem and wireless) are common.

Powerful Processing Power: Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core Duo processors allow simultaneous use of multiple applications so you accomplish more in less time enabling a true multi-tasking environment. Intel Celeron M processor is also available.

Bright Widescreen Displays: Choice of 15.4-inch widescreen displays with optional HP BrightView technology, which makes viewing more vivid and clear. The striking widescreen display provides more viewing area than standard TFT screens for increased productivity.

Connectivity: A broad range of wired and wireless solutions help you stay connected at work, at home and on the go.

    • HP Professional Innovations – hardware features and software solutions designed to enhance security, ease of use and reliability.

Security: To protect your valuable data, HP ProtectTools provides a suite of enhanced security capabilities designed to guard against unauthorized access to networks and business critical data. DriveLock helps prevent the data on your hard drive from being compromised even if your notebook is lost or stolen. HP Disk Sanitizer allows you to completely erase your hard drive data prior to disposal or service event.

Ease of use: Comprehensive features include a large, crisp widescreen display, a full sized keyboard, a recessed touchpad with scroll zone and near silent touchpad buttons for extra comfort.

The HP Panel Protection System helps prevent the display from scuffing and scratching, and the HP Mobile Data Protection System helps protect the hard drive from shock and vibration to reduce the risk of data corruption.

  • Dell XPS M2010 Review
By PCMAN on February 5th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

    0,1425,sz=1&i=129537,00.jpg

The Dell XPS M2010 is a new breed of technology for portable entertainment or productivity. Sporting a unique design, the system’s multimedia features include a 20.1-inch, high-definition widescreen monitor, eight speakers plus a subwoofer, a detachable, full-sized Bluetooth wireless keyboard and gyroscope-enabled remote, a webcam and a slot-load DVD drive. The XPS M2010 is a huge step forward as far as design is concerned; an innovative concept that’s a hybrid of a desktop and notebook.

The Dell’s unconventional structure houses a 20.1in widescreen monitor, which is attached to the base via a hinge bar. This leather-bound hinge also acts as a sturdy handle for carrying the laptop. At 8.6kg, it’s far too heavy to carry around, even for short periods, but there’s no problem with moving it around the house or carrying it out to the car.The base has a hidden slot loading dual-layer DVD burner and an array of touch-sensitive, backlit volume and media keys.
The hinge raises it 2.5in above the base, so it’s positioned as standalone monitors normally are. This relieves neck strain caused by peering down at a notebook’s TFT panel. The glossy screen is ideal for watching movies and taking advantage of the included Windows XP Media Center operating system.

The Intel Core Duo T2600, a first-generation dual-core processor, running at 2.16GHz powers this laptop. It’s a fast processor, although the new Core 2 Duo models, due out on 28 August, will no doubt eclipse it.An ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 is the supplied graphics card and, while there are better cards out there, it is certainly up to the task of mainstream gaming and media playback. It will also be capable of running the advanced GUI features of Windows Vista, which is due early 2007.
