From the moment you open up the graphite-coloured lid of the HP Compaq nc2400, you know you’re onto a good thing. The 12.1in TFT has a crisp 1,280 x 800 resolution and doesn’t suffer from reflections (unlike the Sony VAIO opposite), because it doesn’t have a glossy coating. It doesn’t appear quite as bright as the TX3’s screen, but this is an illusion - the only real disadvantage is that colours aren’t as saturated.

HP Compaq’s nc2400 is clearly aimed at the corporate or business traveler with the features they have packed into it. While it isn’t as thin and light as other ultraportable systems, they have chosen to add a bit of extra weight and size in order to fit in a 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive. It would have been nice to see HP include a DVD burner instead, but just having the drive is a huge step above other ultraportables.

The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 notched a 3DMark03 score of 1,084, which means that, while you won’t be able to play power-hungry games like WarCraft, you can watch a DVD on a long plane ride. You can upgrade to a nine-cell battery for $50 more, which should give you about nine hours of runtime.

The nc2400’s staid black-and-gray case measures 11.1 inches wide, 8.3 inches deep, and an inch thick at the front (1.2 inches thick at the back), making it a bit larger than the ThinkPad X60s and much larger than the Fujitsu LifeBook P7120. Though the nc2400 base configuration weighs 3 pounds, our test unit, configured with a six-cell battery, weighed 3.6 pounds, placing it on the heavier end of the ultraportable spectrum. Still, even with its small, 0.8-pound AC adapter, the nc2400 is light enough for regular travel.

Pretty much everyone knows that I’m a sucker for ultra-portable notebooks, and every time a thinner, lighter and more feature rich laptop arrives in the lab I tell myself that THIS is the one that I want – for now anyway. My allegiance is constantly switching from Sony TX and SZ series machines, to Samsung Q series, Lenovo ThinkPad X series and even the odd Dell Latitude. But now my attention has been dragged off in a new direction, one that I haven’t looked to for many years in fact, because sitting in front of me is the HP Compaq nc2400 and it is, quite simply, excellent.
