The ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC is the second generation X-series Tablet PC / notebook convertible machine from Lenovo. The X60 Tablet PC is a Core Duo based machine that offers both significant performance and feature enhancements over its X41 Tablet PC predecessor. The X60 Tablet (X60t hereafter) is based upon the 12.1″ screen X60s ultraportable released earlier this year. While many have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Tablet PC incarnation of the X60, we’re happy to say the best comes to those who wait.

The ThinkPad X60s is the latest incarnation of the popular ultraportable ThinkPad X-series from Lenovo. The X60s is the evolution of the former ThinkPad X41 notebook, while the ThinkPad X60 (no “s”) is the update to the ThinkPad X32. This review will focus on the changes between the X41 and X60s. The main difference between the Core Duo X60 and X60s notebooks is that the X60s has a low voltage processor while the X60 does not, therefore this review can still be treated as a general overview for both models.

This ThinkPad X60 is one of the first systems to ship with Windows Vista Business. One of the differences between that and upgrading a system with Windows XP is that most (if not all) of the management applications and key drivers are configured properly and ready to use. For instance, the Lenovo ThinkVantage suite, a comprehensive set of management utilities, is Vista-ready. That means Backup and Restore, Access Connections (Network Management), and Active Protection (hard-drive protection) work seamlessly with Vista. Despite that impressive lineup, however, ThinkVantage will have to compete with the much improved management suite served up by Windows Vista.

Measuring 10.8 inches wide, 9.6 inches deep (10.5 inches with the extended battery, which also makes a handy grip), and 1.1 inches thick, the ThinkPad X60 tablet is one of the best compromises on the market for those who want both a full-featured laptop and an ultraportable tablet. Its 4.4-pound weight (with the extended battery) is a bit lighter than the LifeBook T4215’s and the HP Compaq tc4400’s; in our use the ThinkPad felt light enough to carry around every day, though the extended battery made it a bit too heavy to hold in one arm while taking notes in tablet mode. Its candy bar-sized AC adapter adds 0.7 pound to the tablet’s total weight.

The wireless broadband connectivity from Verizon Wireless is well integrated with the machine’s ThinkVantage utilities, which help you manage your wired and wireless connections, back up and restore your system, access tech support, and more. That said, the Access Connections manager could make it easier to connect with EV-DO. As it stands, you have to go through a wizard to set a profile. It isn’t hard, but other PC makers handle this function seamlessly in the background as you roam.
