The Dell XPS 710 H2C Edition has an innovative, two-stage cooling solution that helps cool the processor even at its highest mode, and does so more effectively than Dell’s air-cooling solution. The H2C hybrid cooling system combines a liquid radiator, a thermoelectric cooling module and control circuitry to optimize CPU cooling with minimal power. Ideal for gaming enthusiasts, the system is designed to help the XPS 710 H2C Edition stay cool in overclocked mode2—up to 9 degrees cooler even when you clock it at bin+2 speeds.
With the optional Intel® CoreTM 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core processor, the XPS 710 H2CTM Edition offers a massive performance leap over previous generations of single-core processor-based desktops. Intel quad-core technology allows you to simultaneously create, share and enjoy rich media content, such as high-definition video, without compromising performance.

The XPS 710 H2C is built into the now-familiar XPS 700 chassis, with its love-it-or-hate-it styling. The black outer casing is exclusive to the H2C (lesser XPS 710s are silver with black or red face plates). It is a big, heavy box of metal and plastic, and though I think it has a lot more character than some of the more blocky PCs out there, it does take up a lot of desk or floor space—and what’s with that lean forward? The lights on the front, reflecting off the ribbed front panel, kind of evoke a waterfall from some angles, but the system can’t avoid looking like a big metal tube from others.

The main reason we’re giving the XPS 710 H2C an Editors’ Choice award is because of what you get for the price. For $5,759, you get an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core processor overclocked to 3.2GHz out of the box–a first for Dell. You also get 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, two 768MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX graphics cards, and 1TB of hard drive storage between two 10,000rpm 150GB drives and a single 750GB 7,200rpm unit. Virtually every boutique vendor would charge you at least $500 more for a similar configuration.

Otherwise, this is an amazing machine. For a start, it’s almost noiseless thanks to its advanced cooling system, which also means the processor can run faster for longer. Given that the Dell is powered by Intel’s Quad-Core Extreme QX6700, this holds out the promise of acres and acres of performance, and the PC sprinted through our tests in record-breaking time, achieving a high-point of 168 WorldBench points. And it won’t even be until we see true multicore applications and games that this PC can really show us what it’s made of.

The XPS 710 H2C Edition is billed as a top-of-the-line ultra-performance machine built with the most hardcore of gamers in mind, a niche that Alienware is very familiar with. Not only does the XPS 710 H2C hold the distinction of being Dell’s first non-limited edition factory overclocked computer, it also uses Dell’s first in-house liquid cooling system to keep it’s quad-core power plant cool. The XPS 710 H2C is the most heavily performance-specified XPS system yet, with an Intel Core 2 QX6700 processor, dual GeForce 8800 GTXs, 4 GB of RAM and two Western Digital Raptors in a RAID 0 array, as standard equipment.
