With only a 10in screen, the tiny Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 ultra portable notebook provides some reasonable connectivity and despite its size, it even includes an optical drive. Like many ultra portable notebooks the long battery life was impressive, but its performance left a little to be desired.

To keep battery life up and heat emissions down Fujitsu has used the Intel U1400 single core 1.20GHz Ultra Low Voltage CPU, but might have benefited from using Intel’s slightly more powerful Dual Core Ultra Low Voltage CPU, the U2500.

Overall our experience using the P7230 with Windows Vista Business Edition was smooth, but some small performance hiccups during basic tasks suggest that it may struggle a little with more taxing applications. The P7230 encoded 53 minutes of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files in four minutes and 36 seconds, which is a fairly slow but not unexpected result. We tested the system with its out-of-the-box configuration using 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM, but increasing the RAM to the maximum of 2GB will certainly help performance. Its other specifications include an 80GB hard disk and onboard graphics.

The Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 is a 10.6” widescreen display ultraportable that packs a lot into a little space. With a typically beautiful and blazingly bright Fujitsu CrystalView display and an integrated optical drive, this machine can serve as a nice little entertainment as well as work device when you’re on the go. With a low voltage Core Solo processor it’s far from powerful performance wise, but it is a powerful business tool for doing work on the go.

Smaller than a piece of A4 paper, and having barely a 3cm profile, the LifeBook P7230 weighs only about 1.33kg with a 10.6-inch Superfine Wide XGA TFT-LCD screen. Yet, the petite unit is packed with essential features you would expect today’s modern computer to be equipped with, including being fully upgradeable to Windows Vista™.

The 10.6-inch widescreen display, with its average 1280 x 768 (WXGA) native resolution, delivers adequate screen real estate, though text looks considerably smaller than what you’ll see on even a 12- or 13-inch display with comparable resolution. That said, the LifeBook P7230’s display is crisp and bright enough for productivity tasks and is the perfect size for watching DVDs on a plane or train.

The smallish keyboard and touch pad are comfortable to use, although the left and right mouse buttons are too tiny to hit reliably. Two quick-launch buttons sit above the keyboard: one launches a Web browser, but the other is unusual in that it will switch you into the system’s Eco mode, instantly resetting several system options to cut power consumption and extend battery life. It’s clever, but make sure before you press it that you don’t need any of the devices (FireWire port, media card reader, optical drive) that are automatically disabled in this mode.

The screen itself is bright and clearly visible with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. As long as it isn’t tilted too sharply from the optimum straight-on viewing angle it projects a strong clear image. The keyboard, though small, was comfortable to type on as none of the most commonly used keys have been downsized to fit. The touchpad is responsive and easy to use. Two USB 2.0 ports are available as well as the FireWire port, 56k modem, 802.11 a/b/g wireless and 10/100/100 LAN port.
