Asus has announced new Dolby driven laptops. The Asus A7J is compatible with Dolby Home Theater and features a surround sound system ready for playback through the notebook’s speakers, as well as a digital TV tuner and remote control.

The features Dolby Digital Live which converts any audio source in Dolby Digital in real time, “immersing players in high-quality surround sound that puts them at the center of the action”, Asus claimed.

The Centrino-branded machine is based on a 2GHz Core Duo T2500 processor. It’s got a 17in, 1,680 x 1,050 display driven by an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB of dedicated memory, expandable to 512MB using HyperMemory-linked system RAM, of which there’s 1GB of 667MHz DDR 2. Connectivity comes courtesy of 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. It offers 120GB of HDD storage and a DVD±R/RW slotload drive.

The Asus A7J has a lot of strong features that make up for just a few minor quirks in design. The super sharp 17″ display with the Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB adapter will keep most people happy whether you’re watching a DVD, playing games, or viewing photos online. The audio quality was a definite surprise in its ability to reproduce surround sound using four integrated speakers that surpassed my expectations. For performance and resiliency, the 1GB RAM and the 667MHz memory bus definitely helps give you extra performance while keeping you slightly ahead of the upgrade curve.

This dual-core chip is reinforced by 1GB of DDR2 533MHz memory, and rather than use the standard integrated Intel graphics chip, Asus has gone for a discrete solution. In this case it’s a Radeon X1600 XT chip, ATI’s flagship mobile adaptor. While the A7J has a wide aspect ratio mouse touchpad, gamers will be pleased to note the inclusion of a separate USB mouse.

All the usual connectivity suspects turn up in this laptop. Five USB 2.0, one FireWire and an ExpressCard slot permit peripheral linkup. If the 17-inch display is too wussy, a larger cinematic experience may be possible through the VGA, S-Video or DVI port. Gigabit Ethernet and a modem handle wired connections, while invisible wireless networking is possible through infrared, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios
