The main attraction is the 17-inch wide-screen LCD, which features a 1,440×900 resolution and Acer’s CrystalBrite technology to reduce glare and improve contrast. For the money, the screen is moderately bright and sharp, with decent contrast. Its size affords you ample workspace, and Acer’s GridVista app will instantly resize multiple windows to fit the screen—very handy for multitaskers. Vista’s Aero graphics look good on it, too, as do its Gadgets and Acer’s collection of Empowering Technology widgets, which give you quick access to security features, system and network information, backups, and more. At the top of the LCD you’ll find the OrbiCam, a rotating, 640×480-resolution Webcam you can use to capture video in front of or behind the screen.

The Aspire 9300 offers a good blend of features for all things multimedia. The four USB ports are more than enough to connect to various peripherals. You can import video footage from your camcorder using the FireWire port, but I did find that process a little slow with Windows Movie Maker 6.0 (built into Vista). Clearly, that’s a performance issue: The video-encoding software heavily taxes the already slow processor. Adobe Photoshop CS2, another demanding application, ran successfully as long as the amount of background tasks was minimal.

Performance-wise, the Acer Aspire 9300-5005 is firmly at the back of the pack compared to the first wave of Windows Vista desktop replacement systems we’ve looked at. That’s to be expected, as even our Dell E1705 was configured to cost twice as much, with a high-end 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 CPU. Another 17-inch AMD system, the HP Pavilion dv9000z, stepped up to a 2.2GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-64, outperforming both other systems on our iTunes encoding and Photoshop CS2 tests. Despite the Acer’s low benchmark scores, we didn’t experience any issues with the Acer Aspire 9300-5005 while performing casual tasks such as Web surfing or playing music or movie files.
