Want to get the most out of Windows® Vista? Alienware can help. Since Vista is the first Windows operating system that can scale to a computer’s hardware capabilities, how much you get out of Vista is directly linked to how much technological force is packed into your PC. The 19-inch display on the Aurora mALX may be a backbreaker, but it’s also a beauty. Though the native resolution of 1,680×1,050 is lower than that of some 17-inch laptops, the screen has plenty of real estate for multitasking, graphic design, or immersive game environments. The screen size alone is awe-inspiring: underwater scenes from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou were entrancing, and we actually got a bit dizzy while playing Doom 3. The display’s glossy finish helped colors pop but was not overly reflective. Our only complaint is that the lid seemed to be made of cheap plastic; though it didn’t seem likely to break or crack, it did creak and pop every time we opened it or adjusted the display angle.

The mALX is one of the largest “laptop” computers we’ve ever laid our eyes on. The thing is just enormous and weighs in at a scale-tipping 15 pounds! Yet instead of it being an unwieldy beast, it got the full-on Alienware “treatment.” The aforementioned screen is delicious to behold and the case has been airbrushed in a Giger-esque style with true car-quality paint that modulates its black color to a deep purple through light refraction. This puppy even has five speakers including a sub-woofer. Yes, you heard correctly, a subwoofer is housed underneath its chassis.

The mALX’s 3DMark scores promised good things to come (27,116 on 03 and 5,624 on 06), and it generated stellar frame rates in F.E.A.R.: 85 fps on auto-detect and 81 fps with settings maxed. Even with 4X full-screen antialiasing and all lighting and shadow options enabled, that performance was absolutely smooth. The view was so nice we wanted to play the game all over again.
