The U1F has a sturdy case, and its 4,200rpm 80GB hard drive is shock-mounted on foam railings. To upgrade the RAM you’ll have to throw away a 1GB chunk of existing memory - the entire amount available in the small bottom compartment (an additional 512MB is built into the motherboard), but at least you have the option to expand the amount of system memory.

Just like the Sony TX3XP, the Asus U1F has an 11.1in screen with a native resolution of 1,366 x 768, and also just like the Sony, the screen in the U1F uses LED backlight technology. Interestingly, Employing an LED backlight brings with it several advantages, not least of which is how thin the screen can be compared to traditional TFT examples. The LED backlight also rewards the user with a wider colour gamut and should improve the overall battery life of the notebook. When Sony first introduced LED backlight technology with the TX1XP, there was a significant problem with light bleed at the base of the screen, but this was improved upon and pretty much eradicated with later models. Thankfully the U1F shows no signs of light bleed, indicating that this screen is based on the latter technology, rather than the original design.

The beauty of the notebook is complimented with its simple and clean lines. The stainless contour gives the notebook as structured appearance with sturdiness while the LCD cover is high in hardness for enhanced screen protection. To enhance the overall high mobility design of the U1F while keeping all parts well-protected, magnesium-aluminum alloy and carbon fiber alloy are used for the cover and base of the notebook respectively.

The U1 isn’t blessed with the fastest of components, but that’s not to say it’s feeble. ASUS has managed to cram in a 1.06GHz U2400 Core Duo processor and 1.5GB of RAM, which is more impressive than the typical single-core CPU and 1GB of RAM we’ve seen in similar laptops. If 1.5GB of RAM sounds like an unusual number, that’s because the laptop has 512MB built into the motherboard and a further 1GB of removable memory. If 1.5GB doesn’t sound like much, there’s always the possibility of adding more memory courtesy of Vista’s ability to use ordinary USB keys as system memory.

The U1F screen adopts a special LED backlight panel that is half the width of and 1/3 lighter than the traditional LCD panel. It operates with lowers power consumption and offers better luminance as well as faster response time. In addition, the 11.1-inch glare-type widescreen with exclusive Splendid Color Enhancement Engine displays vivid colors and sharp details for the most enjoyable viewing experience,” the Asustek’s press release says.
