The 12.1-inch screen has a glossy finish (which you’ll either love or loathe) and a 1,280 x 800 native resolution. It’s very bright with vivid colours, making watching DVD movies a joy. The Q35 comes with an integrated dual format DVD drive which also happens to burn DVD+R Dual Layer discs, so backing up data to an optical disc is a doddle.

The Intel Core Duo processor is optimised for multi-threaded applications and multitasking. You can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications such as graphics-intensive games or advanced programs - while downloading or running virus-scanning security programs in the background.

The Samsung Q35 ticks pretty much all the boxes when it comes to ultra-mobile computing. It’s small, light, stylish and is packed with cutting edge features to keep even heavy duty users happy. The dual core CPU, super-multi DVD writer and well above average battery life combine to make the Q35 a very tempting prospect. But when you throw the attractive price into the equation, it’s impossible not to recommend this notebook.

It weighs in at 1.9kg so it isn’t as light as the Lenovo, but it feels just as sturdy as the X60. The lid in particular is strong, giving ample protection to the bright and glossy 12.1in widescreen TFT. The equally well-built base houses a comfortable keyboard with a sensible layout and all the necessary function keys, such as one to switch off the screen’s backlight if you need to conserve the battery.

The silver keyboard is also a joy to use, being firm and precise. It would be perfect if it weren’t for the transposing of the Fn and Ctrl keys - everything else is where you’d expect it to be. The Fn key offers a decent array of shortcuts for muting audio, enabling Wi-Fi, checking battery level and disabling the touchpad. The touchpad and buttons are among the best examples here, being more comfortable than most. Generally, the chassis is sturdily built although the screen isn’t as well protected from knocks as the Lenovo’s.
