If you want advanced digital entertainment coupled with leading-edge mobile performance and communication features, our HP Pavilion dv6500t Entertainment Notebook PC delivers! Its highlights: a 15.4″ Brightview display and a dazzling new high-gloss design.
This notebook’s 15.4″ high-definition widescreen facilitates viewing; the BrightView option provides a higher contrast ratio and better viewing with DVD movies and games. An Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card with 128MB dedicated video memory delivers best-in-class video for games and multimedia, and you also get integrated Altec-Lansing stereo speakers. The integrated HDMI port (available only with discrete graphics option) lets you view high-definition content on your HDTV (cable sold separately).

HP has scored big with its piano-lacquer Pavilion design, and the new HP Pavilion dv6500t sticks with it, adding minimal visual upgrades. The subtle wave-pattern pinstriping has been replaced by a more circular imprint, but the glossy black exterior and silver keyboard deck look as sharp and sleek as ever (fingerprint smudges notwithstanding). The biggest draw, however, is its Santa Rosa chipset, which churned out good performance numbers and very good battery life

Storage choices cover the usual gamut, with hard drive sizes ranging from 80GB all the way up to 200GB. As battery life is adversely affected by the faster 7200 RPM drives, only 5400 RPM models are available for selection, except for the 200 GB drive, which is a 4200 RPM model. Using the lower RPM drives also helps to keep prices down, which is again in keeping with the midrange target audience. We recently took a closer look at Intel’s Turbo Memory technology, but HP doesn’t bother supporting the feature on this particular notebook. An 8X SuperMulti DVD burner (with LightScribe support) comes standard, but HP does offer one high-end storage option with a $400 HD-DVD upgrade. The unit we were sent did not include an HD-DVD drive.

The dv6500t features HP QuickPlay 3.2, which lets you launch DVDs, music, and photos at the touch of a button. An included remote, which tucks away in the ExpressCard slot, lets you control QuickPlay from up to 10 feet. Transfer photos from your camera to the dv6000t via the optional 5-in-1 digital media card reader, then use our Photosmart Premier software for editing, printing, organizing, sharing, and storing of photos. If you pick a SuperMulti DVD±RW/R drive, you can turn your photos into movies, plus edit video and create CDs and DVDs. Choose the LightScribe option on the DVD±RW/R drive to laser-etch labels on CDs and DVDs as you create them.

For gamers, the 128MB Nvidia GeForce Go 8400M GS graphics chip means that while the dv6500t won’t match a gaming laptop such as the HP Pavilion HDX, you can get some decent gaming scores out of it at lower resolutions. While we could only get a somewhat choppy 23.8 frames per second (fps) out of Quake 4 at 1,024×768, once we turned off high-end features like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, the frame rate jumped to a very playable 47.5fps.

Multimedia junkies still have the HP QuickPlay feature that was found on the dv6000t. This entertainment menu launches with one tap or a swipe of the touch-sensitive strip at the top of the keyboard, letting you enjoy DVD movies, music, personal videos, and photo slide shows without booting Windows. Meanwhile, fantastic stereo speakers pump out the sound. An ExpressCard TV tuner is remains a $130 option. The Pavilion dv6500t’s dazzling look may not be for everyone, but lurking beneath the glossy surface is a serious laptop. If high fashion fits your portable lifestyle, work never looked so good.

Cool laptop, but not all models have GeForce 8400M. The majority of sold dv6500t laptops are with integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics and with no HDMI out.
