The Latitude X1 is designed and built for the rigors of life on the road and meets the full scope of Dell’s quality and reliability testing. The keyboard is sealed to protect against spills. The 12.1-inch, wide-aspect display has shorter height than traditional screens and fits easily in tight spaces, including tray tables pinched by fully reclined seats.

Available as an option on the new Latitude is a 32GB Flash hard drive, which Dell said offers better reliability and performance than a traditional hard disk. It can also extend battery life, which Dell quotes at 4.5 hours as standard, but this option adds £155 to the price of the laptop when compared with a standard 60GB hard drive.

The Latitude X1 weighs just 2.5 pounds (3.1 pounds with its tiny AC adapter)–on the lighter end of the ultraportable spectrum. It’s just a couple of ounces heavier than the IBM ThinkPad X40 and about 10 ounces lighter than the Fujitsu LifeBook P7010, and its screen is the largest of the three. The notebook measures 11.2 inches wide and 7.7 inches deep; its front edge is an inch thick, though the battery widens the rear to 1.3 inches.

The X1 is fully upgradable, even if the process is not documented in the users’ manual (a hard-to-search Acrobat document without hyperlinks). One memory slot and the unit’s 4200-rpm hard drive–60GB in our test machine–are within easy reach under the keyboard. Just remove seven small screws on the bottom of the laptop, pop a couple of keyboard latches and extract a few more screws beneath to free the hard drive and a metal plate over the DIMM slot. An inaccessible base 256MB of RAM comes built in.

Like all Latitudes, the X1 offers more built-in security than the typical notebook, integrating the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip. The TPM is a hardware chip that sits on the motherboard and offers a safer means of storing your passwords than what Windows has. We found that the TPM software is better integrated and more user friendly on the Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad X41. As the X1 doesn’t have a smart-card reader, and its design is different from the rest of the Latitudes, those docking solutions will not be compatible.

One potentially huge pitfall for business users is the Latitude X1’s lack of a PC Card slot. The included CompactFlash slot let you connect some of the same types of devices that are typically installed as PC Cards. If you want to install a faster Wi-Fi or a high-speed cellular PC Card, you’ll be out of luck. Having Bluetooth built into this ultraportable means you can use a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone as a modem, but this process is usually complicated and some carriers don’t support the necessary dial-up networking profile for their devices.
