There are several features I like about this tower better than the smaller form factor of the M52’s. First is that it has more room inside and therefore has better airflow to keep the system cool and so there is less noise from the fans. The M52 processor fan has a tendency of being loud when the processor has some load, but this M55e is better and I do not hear the fan at all. It is a bit faster than the M52 also. The doubled hard drive capacity (160 GB) was very much needed for me because I store a lot of scripts and data on my local drive.

Graphics don’t fare too much better than storage. The system only comes with an integrated Intel GMA 3000 graphics processor. This is fine for your day to day work and limited 3D, but it isn’t really sufficient to power the Aero interface. Lenovo gets around this problem by bundling the Windows XP Professional operating system instead of the new Vista.

Included with the system are the ThinkVantage utilities that are one of Lenovo’s big strengths. Carried over from when IBM ran the show, these utilities are geared toward business computing. The Rescue and Recovery tool can back up and restore your system from a catastrophic failure, such as a virus attack. I’d recommend keeping your important files backed up on an external drive or on a network drive, but the Rescue and Recovery tool can help if your system is too sluggish at start-up, or if it won’t boot at all.
