The 14-inch transflective widescreen looks really nice against the piano-black finish. It’s a typical screen with a standard 1,280-by-800 resolution, much like the Pavilion dv2500t. If you want to kick it up a notch, the Inspiron 1420 has a nice 1,440-by-900 resolution on its 14-inch screen. Gateway also launched a 15-inch display version of the T-140X, dubbed the M-150X. With the 15-inch, you get a bigger screen and other HD-friendly features (our review unit didn’t have HD playback, but you can always upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD-ROM drive). The full-size keyboard is solid and responsive. The mouse buttons resemble the ones on the Gateway E-100M; they feel nice but can be loud at times.

Performance is below average, but you have to realize that the price reflects the components. The 1.5-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 CPU is one grade below the 1.6-GHz T5450 processor on the Inspiron 1420. You’ll need to spend an extra $100 to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 2GB, because the system runs Windows Vista Home Premium, and 1GB simply isn’t enough for that. For about the same price, the Inspiron 1420 gives you a premium graphics card, the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS. Meanwhile, the T-140X loads integrated graphics, which have a knack for sucking up system memory as well. Even HP offers discrete graphics as an option

At only 5.6 pounds and 13 x 9.7 x 1.3 inches, the T6815 is light and compact enough to tote around town but big enough to offer a good-sized keyboard. The keys flexed somewhat under rigorous typing, but they get the job done. A brushed-metal strip above the layout contains buttons that launch Windows Media Center and Music Library, as well as control CDs and DVDs. We’re fans of the volume strip that lets you swiftly raise or lower the notebook’s sound by swiping a finger, as well as the onscreen meter that displays your volume level.
