  • Philips enters the notebook game in Brazil
By PCMAN on November 29th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

image Details are pretty sketchy right now, but it looks like Philips is set to release its first two notebooks in Brazil in December. The two models both fall on the smaller end of the scale, with an 11-inch magnesium alloy model rocking a U2400 Core Duo, a 120GB disk, 1GB of RAM and a dual-layer burner for R$5499 ($2477), and a piano black 13-inch model (pictured) sporting a T7300 Core 2 Duo, a 120GB disk, a dual layer burner and 2GB of RAM for R$3,999 ($2165). We’re still looking for model numbers, but Philips says these were developed "specifically for the Brazilian market," so don’t expect to see them turning up Stateside anytime soon.

  • Dell aims at MacBook Pro with XPS M1530
By PCMAN on November 27th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

image Dell today completed the overhaul of its XPS notebook line by introducing the XPS M1530. The system is one of Dell’s few high-end 15-inch notebooks and is aimed at the same audience that would otherwise seek slim, stylized portables such as Apple’s MacBook Pro: the minimalist system is 0.9 inches deep at its thinnest point and uses a slot-load optical drive (like the M1330) in place of the usual tray-loading option. A minimum 128MB GeForce 8400M GS graphics chip provides dedicated 3D acceleration even on the least expensive model, which also includes a 2-megapixel webcam and a fingerprint reader.

  • Epson boosts its Tiny Endeavor ST100 Series with the ST110
By PCMAN on November 27th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

image Epson launched a new compact PC a bit like a Mac mini, but oriented for a business use, basically a compact sized computer in order to be easily placed on any desk. 1 Year later Epson decided to upgrade its little ST100 with the ST110. Still available in BTO (Build To Order), our ST110 can be installed with Windows XP or Vista, has 512MB of RAM (Max 3GB), 40GB of HDD (Max 250GB at 5400rpm or Max 120GB at 7200rpm), a DVD DL Multi burner, a GM965 Express Chipset, and the choice of different CPU’s, ranging from the Celeron 530 up to the Core 2 Duo T7800.
Also as you can see on the picture just below, there is a pretty nice option for the ST110 and 100; a 19” Screen with a stand on its back in order to hide your computer…. Definitively less exciting than an iMAC, but I am sure that a lot of corporations may find this solution pretty nice !

  • HP insists touchscreen technology is the future
By PCMAN on November 26th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

A Hewlett Packard executive in Taiwan has been discussing the future of the market and offered some glimpses of what we can expect soon from the hardware company.
imageDennis Chen, personal systems group general manager at HP Taiwan noted that touchscreen-based products including PDAs, handsets and notebooks will become more mainstream in 2008, while home desktop PCs using this technology will become more commonplace.
HP has a vested interest in this tech - they were first to (mass) market with a touchscreen desktop PC, the IQ 770.
Critics see this format as impractical, for one ergonomic reason in particular; sitting at a desk and having to keep your arm in the air in order to operate the monitor by touch is not comfortable.
HP is planning to showcase its touchscreen-based PCs at Taiwan’s IT Month show in December and - another snippet - is apparently also planning to launch "several" UMPCs in the first half of next year.

  • Panasonic CF-W7 Gets Subaru Impreza Styling
By PCMAN on November 26th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

image Super car inspired laptops are ten a penny, and despite their styling they rarely have anything special to offer. Panasonic’s CF-W7 continues with the pointless aesthetic makeovers, but this time Subaru are getting in on the action. The CF-W7 will be limited to a production of 500 pieces, so if you are hot for Subaru Impreza WRX STI styles, grab these while they are hot. Under the hood, Panasonic has packed in a flurry of standard features, including:

Windows Vista Business, CoreTM2 Duo processor, 1GB SDRAM (2GB upgradeable maximum), 80GB HDD, 12.1" TFT color XGA display and all of this will weigh you down around 1.2Kg. In the wallet department, you will be hit to the tune of 270000Yen ($2,499), but expect the price to rise quickly if you plan to import, which will be imperative as these blue novelties are only launching in the land of the rising sun.

  • Rock Xtreme 770 notebook with GeForce 8800M GTX
By PCMAN on November 25th, 2007 | No Comments Comments

NVIDIA’s recently rolled out GeForce 8800M GTX has already made its way into a laptop, specifically Rock’s Xtreme 770, specially updated to integrate the new chip. The 770 features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, a image7200RPM 200GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, a 17-inch 1920×1200 display, and that all important GeForce 8800M GTX graphics card. The new card is certainly no disappointment, kicking the 8700M by a factor of two in most gaming benchmarks (although that also says a lot about the 8700M’s lackluster performance.) The bottom line with the 8800M GTX is that it enables acceptable performance in Crysis at reasonable resolutions, which is more than can be said of most desktops. However, you might want to hold off until the GPU reaches lappies other than the Rock Extreme 770, which costs £2,199: that’s over $4,500 at the current exchange rate.
