  • Polywell Poly X3800
By PCMAN on February 29th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

image Looks may be deceiving when it comes to the Polywell Poly X3800 ($3,975 direct, $4,499 with 24-inch widescreen LCD monitor). At first glance it appears to be merely a standard, underwhelming tower server or desktop PC. But inside you’ll find some serious performance parts—namely, an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 quad-core processor and a single 768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra card (with SLI upgrade capability). Think of it as a Toyota Camry with the Lexus IS F’s big, honking 416 horsepower V8 engine lurking under the hood: a veritable wolf in sheep’s clothing. This is a serious option for those who don’t need a flashy gaming rig yet don’t want to build the alternative themselves.

The X3800 is in the same utilitarian case as the P3503 I reviewed late last year. Its looks may be boring, but they’re certainly practical, allowing plenty of ventilation through the front panel and the case door on the side. There’s enough space inside to shoehorn in another GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card (for SLI performance), though you may have to be creative with the wiring; a second huge 8800 Ultra card will likely block other connectors on the motherboard. The interior wiring is good, with shortened cables and tie wraps keeping things neat enough. It’s not as pretty as some of the other gaming boxes I’ve seen, but it’s efficient.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad X300
By PCMAN on February 27th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

image With the ThinkPad X300 (about $3,000 street), Lenovo is out to prove that the Apple MacBook Air is not the only laptop that can fit snugly into a manila envelope. Granted, it’s a tough act to follow and frustrating, too, especially since the ThinkPad X300 was being developed at the same time as the MacBook Air. Apple made it out of the gate first, putting together a marketing campaign and creating the kind of suspense only it can pull off. But let’s be practical and set aside this race for thinnest laptop. The ThinkPad X300 is an all-around, more sensible solution for business travelers. It weighs about the same as the MacBook Air, depending on how you configure it, and the removable battery, a built-in optical drive, integrated WWAN, and multiple USB ports make this little ultraportable much more desirable from a business standpoint. How to write off the $3,000 price tag, however, is another question.

  • Intel Classmate PC
By PCMAN on February 21st, 2008 | No Comments Comments

imageThe Intel Classmate PC shares a common goal with the OLPC XO-1: to put laptops into the hands of needy children in developing countries. Basically, Intel has enlisted international partners, who will be rebranding the Classmate PC—in coordination with the Taiwanese firm that designed it—and working with governments around the world, which will distribute them to students. The partners will also provide setup and technical support to the schools receiving the laptops. Whether, apart from its humanitarian aim, the Classmate PC was created to help Intel shareholders (it is a for-profit venture), to steal Nick Negroponte’s spotlight, or just to provide healthy competition to his One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative is an open question. One thing’s for sure, though: The Classmate PC is a sturdy, capable little laptop that runs Linux or Windows XP Professional and is an excellent alternative to the XO-1.
