  • Ubuntu launches "Hardy Heron"
By PCMAN on April 29th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

image A Windows-based installer that allows Ubuntu and Windows to coexist on the same machine and a powerful new sound server are the key features of the latest Ubuntu update.
Codenamed “Hardy Heron”, version 8.04 is the second Ubuntu release to offer long-term support.
This means that security and maintenance updates will be available for this version for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server, explains Ars Technica.
The update also includes GNOME 2.22, which is the latest version of the open-source desktop environment, with better security and a redesigned virtual filesystem abstraction layer.
PulseAudio is the new sound server; while this release also includes Wubi, which installs a fully functional Ubuntu environment into a folder in the Windows filesystem.
It basically allows Windows users to enter Ubuntu when they start up.
And it can be uninstalled using the Add/Remove Programs utility in Windows.
Also worth a quick mention is the new CD burning program called Brasero.
The next major version, 8.10, is scheduled for release in October; and is codenamed Intrepid Ibex (who comes up with these names?).
Ubuntu 8.04 is available for download from the Ubuntu website.

  • HP intros green, affordable desktop business PCs
By PCMAN on April 29th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image image

HP on Monday added two new desktop PCs for business users to its range, with the Compaq dc5850 and Compaq dx2450. The two are some of the first HP PCs to use AMD’s triple- and quad-core Phenom X3 processors. The latter is the value-oriented offering, and can be configured with a choice of AMD processors, ranging from the 2.1GHz Sempron, through the 2.8GHz Athlon and to the 2.5GHz Phenom. Four memory slots allow for expansion up to 4GB while NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards are offered as options. Operating systems are Windows offerings that include a range of Vista and XP Professional interfaces, as well as FreeDOS.

The dc5850, meantime, offers more features and higher performance for more intensive business needs, the first of which is an integrated graphics card with dual-monitor support. HP has not revealed the range of chips offered in the dc5850, but did mention AMD’s next-generation, business-class Phenom processor will be part of the all-AMD line-up. Each core of the processors will be user-adjustable in terms of frequency thanks to AMD’s Cool ‘n’ Quiet 2.0 technology.

    image
Regarding efficiency, all dc5850s will be Energy Star 4.0 rated and EPEAT Gold registered. Optional HP Power Manager and Verdiem Surveyor software allow energy-conscious buyers to further streamline consumption.
Otherwise, all configurations of the dc5850 will support RAID with data mirroring back-up. An ATI Radeon 3100 graphics card with support for DirectX 10 technology will likewise be included in the most basic dc5850.
The Compaq dx2450 is available in North America now starting at $369, while the dc5850 is expected to launch worldwide on May 5 and carry a $599 price tag.

  • InPhase to finally ship Tapestry 300r holographic storage solution in May
By PCMAN on April 28th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Talk about escaping the label of vaporware by this much. We’ve been hearing that holographic storage was right around the bend from InPhase for well over three years now, but it has finally managed to get its ducks in a row and should start shipping the unicorn-like Tapestry 300r next month. The firm had a demonstrative version on display at NAB Show earlier this month, and apparently real live working units will be making their way out to archival junkies in just weeks. Granted, it will demand a whopping $18,000 to get a shipping label made with your address on it, and each piece of 300GB media is $180 — but hey, that’s the price you pay these days to know that you’ll decompose before your data degrades.

  • All-in-one Victorian PC From Steampunk Jake Von Slatt is amazing
By PCMAN on April 27th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

imageVon Slatt’s AIO Victorian PC is magnificent and a fine example in retrospect of the Victorian era gone by. Incorporating brass and wood for most part, the modern elements in the design are cleverly tucked away out of view. However the image of using the Table-Saw on the monitor makes one cringe, the end-result negates the feeling.

  • Toshiba revamps Satellite Pro notebooks for 2008
By PCMAN on April 22nd, 2008 | No Comments Comments

      imageimage

Toshiba t his morning gave the same attention to its Satellite Pro notebooks that it did for its new Satellites. Hoping to jumpstart interest in students and pro users, the company has launched five new models with both a redesigned look and new internals. The L300 and L300D serve as Toshiba’s baseline with either Intel Core 2 Duo (L300) or AMD Turion 64 X2 (L300D) dual-core processors and a 15.4-inch screen while offering just the essentials; systems start at $699 for an L300D with a 1.9GHz AMD chip as well as 1GB of memory and a 120GB hard drive, scaling up to a 2GHz Core 2 Duo and a 160GB disk in the $799 L300.

Two small portables help start the new line. The 13.3-inch U400 and 14-inch M300 are both designed for more serious users that want both extra features as well as smaller size, and start with a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo and a 1.3-megapixel webcam; the larger M300 is Toshiba’s starter at $999 with 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, while the smaller but denser screen of the U400 boosts its price to $1,049 without changing the specifications.

    image
One desktop replacement model, the L350, is skewed towards a more upscale audience than its normal Satellite equivalent with the same 17-inch display and extended keyboard but an emphasis on higher CPU performance: it jumps to the same 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo as most of the other Satellite Pros launched today and comes with 2GB of memory along with the 160GB hard drive common to most of the new systems. It sells for $1,099 and should be available immediately along with the other high-end systems.

  • ASUS M50Sa-A1
By PCMAN on April 22nd, 2008 | No Comments Comments

    image

Only a couple of years ago, a typical media center laptop consisted of a 10-pound system that cost an arm and a leg and was married to an electrical outlet. Despite improvements in weight, price, battery life, and features, prices of media center systems have stayed upward of $1,500. The ASUS M50Sa-A1 breaks that price barrier, offering an assortment of features for just $1,299 (list) that is sure to excite home theater enthusiasts. This laptop includes fast parts, such as one of Intel’s latest “Penryn” processors and an ATI graphics card capable of tackling the latest 3D games. Although the M50Sa is an incredible bargain, getting hold of one may be hard since it’s available only at Newegg—a strictly online retailer.
