When Gateway announced the end of its online and phone sales, many people (including some PC Magazine staffers) proclaimed it the end of an era. Well, Gateway is kicking off a new era with its first retail-only PC, the P-7811FX ($1,399 list), available, right now, only at Best Buy. This hulking laptop offers a home-theater-quality 17-inch widescreen along with decent gaming capabilities at a competitive price. In addition, the notebook debuts with the latest Centrino 2 processor, making it an all-around solid system.

The new P-7811FX manages to fix most of the issues we had with those earlier Gateway budget-gaming laptops. It bumps the processor all the way up to a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 and the Centrino 2 platform, adds Nvidia’s new GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card, and ups the screen resolution to an HD-friendly 1,920×1,200. Amazingly, it does all of this for $1,449. Sure, the P-7811FX costs about $100 more than those previous models, but for the PC gamer on a budget, we don’t know of a better deal on a laptop right now.

On the gaming side of things, the P-7811FX fared quite well for a notebook in this price range, but its 1,920×1,200 display is both a blessing and curse. Though the screen makes for a truly immersive gaming experience, the GeForce 9800M GTS doesn’t have enough horsepower to run the latest games at the LCD’s native resolution. It ran our Company of Heroes DirectX 10 (DX10) benchmark at just 20 frames per second (fps) at the native resolution, for example, and was even playable—barely—at 1,024×768, scoring 31.3fps. Performance was much better in DirectX 9, however. Company of Heroes ran at 52fps at 1,920×1,200, and F.E.A.R was a silky smooth 58fps at 1,600×1,200. The P-7811FX also scored an impressive 7,163 in 3DMark06 at 1,600×1,200.

Because the P-7811FX is a desktop replacement with a 17-inch screen, one would expect a heavy notebook, yet its solid 8.8-pound weight is still surprising. Competitors like our Editors’ Choice–winning Acer Aspire 6920G-6071 and the Toshiba Satellite P305-S8825 both weigh less than 8 pounds. Others, like the aforementioned ASUS M70Sa-X2, are comparable in weight but include two hard drives. Needless to say, this isn’t a system you’d want to lug far.

In order to keep the costs of the P-7811FX down, Gateway has elected to go with a single 200GB 7200rpm hard drive rather than s dual drive RAID setup. This means that the data access is slower than the more expensive P-173FX, but it still performs very well compared to traditional notebook drives thanks to its fast spin rate and 16MB of internal cache. An eSATA port is included for use with high performance external drives.

The full-size keyboard is spacious and comfortable and features a full numerical keypad, both of which are surrounded by copper trim. Sandwiched between two average sounding speakers are a flush-mounted, orange-backlit media player control panel and a sliding volume control. The touchpad was responsive and is conveniently positioned to provide easy access to the keyboard without requiring too much wrist movement. Nestled between two mouse buttons is a biometric fingerprint reader.
