Here’s something you don’t see everyday…a product that is designed to actively cool your pc notebook. I remember reading about a lawsuit by someone that sued a manufacturer because his laptop literally burned his, um, lap. Sounds painful and also like that user could have used this product (or a better sense of his surroundings before it got that hot!). The Antec Notebook Cooler is a little less than an inch in height. It comes with a 17-inch USB cable that you plug into your notebook’s usb port. Don’t worry about losing access to that port since the usb plug is open-ended so you can plug additional usb devices to it. The cable is easily stowed in a compartment at the bottom of the device. There are also two cooling fans in the center of the device that run at a very quiet 25.9 decibels.

Antec has designed this clever device to help put your worries to rest. The Notebook Cooler is designed to keep a constant airflow underneath your laptop which in most cases is where it will be drawing air from which will help the laptop’s cooling to work as efficient as possible. Laptop computers are not cheap so you might as well have it running as cool as possible.

The power cord is a foot and a half long, and connects to the fans through a DC jack on the left side of the pad. If you have USB jacks on the left side or back of your computer, the cord will reach. If they’re on the right side, you’ll have to run the cord under the pad. If you only have front USB, the cord will usually fit, although it can get tight if the USB jack is far to the right. The cord is stored in a compartment underneath the pad, accessible by a flat door. I found it difficult to get the cord in and out of the storage space without a hassle.

Some of the symptoms of an overheating laptop can include: spontaneous reboots or shut-downs, locked or hung programs, and of course - the blue screen of death. Obviously at the very least this can be frustrating, but there is also the unseen damage that is occurring to your CPU. Simply put, the fans are there to keep it cool for a reason. If they are blocked and the CPU isn’t cooled, it will overheat and could eventually fry.
