Small, light and affordable is the name of the game in the flourishing market for mini laptops right now.

But when HP, one of the world’s biggest computer makers, entered the fray this year it made its own original statement for the midget laptop - the HP Mini-Note 2133.

Unfortunately, while the HP Mini-Note 2133 is one of the finest of the breed in certain areas, it really misses the mark in others.

Quite unusually HP opted for a VIA processor rather than the usual Intel or AMD offering, in the HP Mini-Note 2133’s case a VIA C-7M CPU designed for low-power use rather like the Intel Atom.

The Mini-Note isn’t anywhere near as user-friendly as the Eee PC, either. While both use Linux operating systems, the SUSE 10.1 OS used by the Mini-Note isn’t tailored in any particular way for inexperienced users, while documentation does little to enlighten. This will no doubt please more experienced users since it presents them with a ready to use machine with the flexibility they want, but anyone else will be left floundering in the dark. Moreover, it makes something of a mockery of HP’s stated ‘education’ target audience, since it seems hard to believe teachers or students weaned on Windows would find the change an easy one.

I’m extremely impressed with the HP 2133 Mini-Note laptop. So much so, that I don’t want to send it back tomorrow! The size is perfect, the display is great, the keyboard is wonderful and the price is nice. Sure, you can get yourself an ASUS EEE PC, for less money… But after you get your hands on the Mini-Note, the EEE PC feels and looks like a cheap toy. I actually purchased the EEE PC for myself thinking I would use it instead of my Macbook Pro for traveling. The small display and low resolution were absolute deal breakers for me though. I would take the Mini-Note on a trip with me in a heartbeat. Well, I would if it were running something other than Vista ;o) If you have been shopping for an ultra-portable laptop, please do yourself a favor and take a look at this one before you buy anything else.

HP is no stranger to small notebooks: The company pioneered the ultraportable market with its 2.9-pound Omnibook back in the early 1990s. Since then, its focus has been on more-traditional consumer and business systems—that is, until Asus successfully introduced its tiny, inexpensive Eee PC 4G earlier this year. Now, HP is back with an itty-bitty competitor of its own: the 2133 Mini-Note PC. If the Eee PC is a VW Bug for the masses, then the Mini-Note is an Audi TT: similar size, but far more comfortable and stylish.

The masterful design is carried over to the interior, where a frameless screen and a wonderful keyboard reside. The 8.9-inch screen is bigger and brighter than the Eee PC’s 7-inch display. "Frameless" refers to the glossy coating on the screen that extends to the screen’s borders, making it look like a miniature HDTV, complete with a pair of speakers along the sides. Further, the size of the screen keeps text or images at its native 1,280-by-768 resolution from looking unbearably tiny. By contrast, the HTC Shift sports an 800-by-480 resolution, but because of the Shift’s smaller screen size, HTC had to put in a resolution toggle switch (to 1,024-by-600), allowing users to fit more content on the screen.

The 2133’s greatest asset is its unique keyboard, which manages to fit in full-size keys by eliminating dead space on the keyboard tray, but we’re less enamored of the pokey Via processor, especially when Intel’s Atom CPUs, seemingly designed specifically for systems like this, are right around the corner. Still, the HP 2133 Mini-Note works well enough for basic Web surfing and office productivity tasks, and it’s quickly become our new favorite pick-up-and-go laptop.

The ultra low voltage VIA processor in the HP 2133 Mini-Note generated far more heat than we typically expect from ultra low voltage processors. Temperature readings taken from the outside of the aluminum and plastic chassis spiked above 110 degrees Fahrenheit in multiple locations and the Mini-Note actually became uncomfortable to hold after 30-45 minutes of serious use.

The cooling fan ran at full speed most of the time and clearly struggled to keep temperatures under control. Most of the time the fan is only loud enough to hear in a perfectly quiet environment, but if you work in a relatively quiet office or classroom setting you should be prepared for coworkers and students to complain about the noise coming from the cooling fan.
