It is been experienced that Tablet PCs were never successful taking off the way laptops and PDAs did in the portable market, however, adaptable tools like Gateway’s fresh line C-141X series might be the technique, which tablets could eventually find their slot. So what is different about C-141X? One different thing about this one is that you can use it as both notebook with full-sized cool keyboard and also as tablet desktop PC allowing you to work on screen with stylus. This 14-inch wide-screen display rotates and also flattens against your keyboard, moving from one device to other easily.

The Gateway C-Series goes on with the C-141 models, following up on the CX200 Series introduced in October of 2005and the company’s initial M275 Tablet PC convertible. Now listed as "Adaptible Notebooks," Gateway stresses to "Get pen-and-paper ease with the Gateway C Series of great convertibles, featuring a notebook’s power and dependability." Sort of an odd way of describing a Tablet PC convertible. They were not dependable before? And so far no convertible, or slate, has been successful in delivering pen and paer ease, and certainly not a seven-pound notebook with a 14-inch screen.

These laptops also include a 7-in-1 media card reader, so it’s easy to transfer files and photos to and from your PDA or digital camera. There’s also a FireWire port and three USB ports, so you can hook peripherals up to these laptops as well. Additionally, the computers’ Bluetooth connectivity gives you a wireless synch-up option for your cell phone or PDA.

The 14.1-inch XGA screen maxes out at (1280×768). While it would be nice to have a higher resolution option when open windows start to pile up, I prefer 1280×768 (not too big nor to small) and I am not hurting for more desktop space. The screen is bright and easy to see even on its lowest settings. There are eight degrees of brightness, and viewing angle/glare does become a problem at the two lowest settings. It’s glossy, but not impossible.

The C-141X’s full-size keyboard is comfortable to type on without being too clacky, and we appreciate that the large touch pad includes a delineated vertical scroll area. Strangely, the mouse buttons are split so that the right is slightly smaller than the left; more notably, we found both buttons a bit stiff and hard to press. As for ports, the C-141X offers a pretty standard selection for a budget notebook, with three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire jack, a VGA input, modem and Ethernet jacks, a PC Card slot, and a media card reader. 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 are also onboard.
