The Gateway P-6860FX is a darn good desktop replacement. The 9.2-pound, 17-inch semi-gloss dynamic display laptop is loaded with Vista Premium 64-bit. It features 4 GB RAM and a hefty 320 GB hard drive with NVDIA GeForce 8800M GTS Graphics. I decided on this model because it fit my budget. About the only disappointing feature is the 1.8 GHz Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor.

Like most desktop replacement notebooks, the P-6860FX has a litany of connectors and expansion ports to ensure maximum productivity at all times. The right side of the notebook includes a 5-in-1 card reader, an eSATA port, Ethernet, FireWire, headphone and mic jacks, an ExpressCard 54 slot and the aforementioned HDMI and VGA-out ports. The left side features two more USB ports as well as a Kensington lock slot. There’s even a 56K modem plug on the back next to the extra-big 9-cell battery – a requirement on a notebook as powerful as this one.

The laptop has a glossy black plastic chassis and aluminium finishing can be seen around the touchpad and the keyboard. Having a 17″ screen does have its benefit apart from the obvious disadvantages, the laptop keyboard has a separate numeric keypad along with the standard keyboard. Media buttons above the keyboard have become the favorite place among manufacturers to place them and same is the case here. The volume control buttons is touch sensitive.

The P-6860 also includes the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, although you’re unlikely to see any real advantages or disadvantages from that in everyday computing tasks or playing current games, until more software is specifically coded for 64-bit systems. Because 32-bit Windows can address only 3GB of RAM, the real advantage of using the 64-bit OS is the capability to use 4GB or more.

In fact, it’s not really all that difficult, and NVIDIA launched exactly that sort of chip in late 2007 with the GeForce 8800M GTS. It has 64 Stream Processors, just like the 9600 GT. Most of the gaming laptops have opted for the more powerful (and more expensive) 8800M GTX with its 96 SPs, so we were quite interested to see exactly how much performance you give up by going with the 8800M GTS. Unfortunately, we can’t really do an apples-to-apples comparison here, because Gateway didn’t stop at cutting down the GPU. In the system we received, they also trimmed the CPU performance quite a bit, dropping all the way to a 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo T5450. That certainly means CPU performance isn’t going to match up well against something like a 2.8GHz X9000; what we want to find out is whether it can still provide adequate performance.
