Illuminated (back-lit) keyboards are usually associated with gaming, but Logitech’s Illuminated Keyboard is simply for those who want an agreeable typing experience on a nicely designed keyboard. If you like to work in a dark environment, having a backlit keyboard is convenient. It’s not mandatory by any means, but it makes typing a little easier - especially for those who have to look at the keys from time to time, like I do. And with a name like "PerfectStroke Key System", Logitech is setting the expectations a little high. So, does the keyboard live up to the hype?

Bolstering its appeal are laser etched, illuminated keys with four different brightness levels. As expected, the keys sport a very short vertical height for less travel, very much like a laptop. Above the main keyboard region are your F-keys, which also double as Fn keys when the Fn button is pressed. Here you have shortcut commands and quick launch buttons, as well as multimedia buttons.

Given its complete lack of depth, the keys on the Illuminated Keyboard feel quite a bit different from most desktop keyboards. In fact, the shallow key presses make it feel more akin to a notebook keyboard. That may be the kiss-of-death for those who prefer the click-clack of tall desktop keyboard keys booming up and down with every stroke, but for typists who favor the quiet, soft feel of a laptop keyboard, it might actually come as a welcome change. We might even suggest that Logitech has taken cues from the ThinkPad’s consistently praised line keyboards and brought them to the desktop. The keys have an uncannily similar look and feel, and Logitech has done an admirable job duplicating the crisp key-press that makes the ThinkPad’s keyboard so well liked.

The backlighting is done in white, which is a welcome change to the mostly blue backlighting we get on gaming keyboards. The backlighting is bright and evenly lights the keys of the keyboard. Fans of wireless keyboards may be disappointed that the keyboard does connect to the PC via USB, which is the sacrifice you make for backlighting.
The one-touch media access keys require the use of a FN key like you find on many laptop keyboards. A full array of media control keys are offered and keys for one touch access to favorite applications and web sites plus shortcuts to Windows Vista features like Gadgets and Flip 3D.

The keyboard has a very subtle, professional appearance; aside from the extremely thin 9.3mm profile, the entire keyboard is black with a small clear plastic border that doesn’t serve a purpose other than to highlight the flat surface of the keys. A built-in wrist rest fixed beneath the keys is covered in a soft rubber material to prevent your hands from slipping while you type. After using the keyboard for a few days, the natural oil on our hands made small prints on the wrist rest, creating blotches that marred the otherwise clean design.
