The Lenovo X200t Tablet PC was introduced on September 22, 2008 as a complement and likely replacement for the company’s X61 Tablet PC. It wasn’t that the X61 needed replacement, but technology moves on, and so between a need to update to Intel’s Centrino 2 technology and a general migration to wide-format displays, Lenovo made the step. And added a number of other features in the process.

The X200 Tablet sports a full-size, spill-resistant keyboard, which of course has the comfortable, tried-and-true ThinkPad design; the keys are very responsive and seem almost to leap back up to meet your fingers. As with the ThinkPad X200, Lenovo has eschewed its usual TrackPoint-and-touchpad combination in favor of only a TrackPoint to streamline the system. That may seem like an odd choice to some, but veteran ThinkPad users and novices should have no problems navigating the 12.1-inch display with just the stick.

Lenovo’s X200(s/Tablet) systems have three USB ports. Lenovo has added a built-in 1.3MP web camera into the upcoming ThinkPad ultraportables, while the newly designed keyboard is the same size as in larger T series. In addition, the UltraBase docking station for the new notebooks includes a DisplayPort digital video/audio connector.

Along with Wi-Fi LAN connectivity and Bluetooth, the X200, X200s, and X200 Tablet systems offer mobile broadband, GPS, WiMAX, and UWB support.

Every other feature satisfies both business and consumer needs. There are three USB ports, an SD slot, and an ExpressCard slot. A great thing about Lenovo laptops is that generally, every wireless technology available is built in, and the X200 Tablet is no exception. The little jut on top of the screen covers WWAN, Centrino 2 Wi-Fi, WiMAX, UWB (wireless USB, which has a range of about 10 meters), Bluetooth, and GPS functions. Not many tablets, let alone business ultraportables, can claim to have this broad range. As for storage options, both spinning and non-spinning drives (64GB and 128GB solid-state drives, or SSDs) are available.

The battery life on the X200 is supposed to be much better according to Lenovo and they claim up to 10 hours of life with the 8-cell battery that extends out the back. If you get the 4-cell they still claim 4-5 hours and the tablet weighs less. The unit I have has the 8-cell and it was showing 6 hours on Balanced/High Performance battery life with a full charge. You can adjust the meter in between to your liking from Energy Saver to High Performance. It seems to be very impressive and lasts long through normal tasks like checking email and surfing the Web.

The 8-cell gives a nice handle to grab on to while in tablet mode as well. More tests will be ran for our full review, but as of right now I give it two thumbs up. That’s almost a full day of work for most users.
