Dell is finally getting around to releasing its 17-inch Precision M6400 mobile workstation, which supports the latest dual- and quad-core Intel processors and offers an optional solid state drive.
When Dell rolled out its revamped Latitude E series of notebooks in August, the company’s executives made a passing reference to several new mobile workstations in the Precision family but were short of details. Now, Dell has officially released the Precision M6400 workstation, and it went on sale Sept. 24 with a base price of $2,599.

The 17-inch laptop for engineers, designers, and multimedia content creators is configurable with the Intel Core 2 Quad QX9300 processor at 2.53GHz, NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M 512MB graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, dual hard drives or solid state drives, providing up to 640GB and 128GB of storage in total respectively, and a DVD burner. Options for up to 16GB of RAM, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M 1GB video card, and up to 1TB of storage will be available by the end of the year.

The notebook also offers up to Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X9100 (3.06 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB) which is lower than the latest CPU offering in M6400, 8 GB of memory, up to 320 GB 7200 rpm SATA II HDD, Blu-ray optical drive, and up to NVIDIA3700M with card with up to 1 GB dedicated video memory, 6-in-1 media card reader, and HDMI port.

You’d also get powerful graphics cards in the M6400 since Dell threw in a Quadro FX 3700M complemented by a 1GB of video memory. For storage, you can have as much as 1TB with the M6400’s dual hard-drive bays which you can partition or setup in RAID array. You’ll also get other features such as DVD-ROM, CD-RW/DVD, DVD+/-RW optical drives, WLAN and Bluetooth, and a slew of security features including steel-reinforced cable lock slots, fingerprint reader and more.
