For starters, the XHD3000 features an array of interface options (see spec box), so you can not only connect to the monitor with a variety of different cables but also have multiple devices hooked up to the screen at once. Then you can switch among, say, your gaming console, laptop, DVD player, cable box, and PC (with each source set at a different resolution) using the onscreen display menu—accessible via touch-sensitive buttons on the monitor’s bezel—or the included remote control. Picture-in-picture functionality gives you access to two content sources simultaneously.

The XHD3000 has an antiglare coating on the screen. This is a welcome departure from the super popular glossy LCD monitors released so often in 2007. The antiglare coating works wonders for improving wide viewing angles and it keeps glare and other reflections off your screen so you can focus on your work, not on the rest of the office behind you.

The XHD3000’s uncluttered design hides a bevy of adjustments. While other 30-inchers let you alter only the brightness, the Gateway offers a full compliment of controls, among them gamma, black level, and saturation. The included EzTune software makes changing the basics simple, but for the more unusual controls, you need to access the elegantly hidden on-screen display. When you press the menu button, menu items appear on screen, and flat, touch-sensitive buttons light up under the glossy black bezel. These blue-lit buttons–which remain invisible until you summon them–change with each of the many menus; only the ones that are needed appear.

Gateway’s EzTune is a version of Portrait Display’s DisplayTune application customized for Gateway displays. EzTune gives you fine grain control over much of the monitor’s features—much more so than the side button controls.

Take the PiP feature, for example. Using EzTune, you can move the PiP anywhere on screen—it’s not limited to one of the four corners.

The native resolution for the XHD3000 is a very high 2,560×1,600, which Gateway dubs "1600p," "Quad-HD," and "Extreme HD." The XHD3000 features Silicon Optix Realta’s HQV video-processing chipset. To achieve this resolution, however, you need to use a PC with a video card that supports dual-link DVI—if you’re using a VGA, single-link DVI, or HDMI connection, the highest resolution you can set the monitor to is 1,920×1,200. But you should know that there’s no HD content available higher than 1080p (1,920×1,080) resolution, which this monitor handles just fine. The display’s other specs include a pixel-response rate of 6 milliseconds, a pixel pitch of 0.251mm, and a contrast ratio of 1,000-to-1.
