Toshiba’s latest business notebook, the M300, won’t blow your hair back with whiz-bang features and record-shattering performance, but it’s a very solid package that covers all the basics one needs in a laptop that’s somewhere between an ultra-portable and a desktop replacement. This 14.1” notebook is tastefully appointed in a Titanium Silver finish, weighs just 5.2lbs, and has one of the best keyboards we’ve ever sampled in a notebook. Though its trialware issues and long boot time are easily remedied, its lack of security features –either biometric or facial recognition – are disappointing on a laptop aimed at business users. Overall it’s still a surprisingly well-polished machine that is extremely affordable and easy to live with.

With three USB ports, the M305 is playing about par for the course in terms of 14.1-inch notebooks, but the M305’s USB slots do something unique to Toshiba’s latest crop of laptops: with their innovative "Sleep and Charge" feature, the ports can be used to charge USB-connected devices (your iPod for instance) regardless of whether the computer is on or not - the only requirement being that the computer has to be connected to AC power. While it doesn’t necessarily solve mobile charging issues (as it won’t draw power when the computer’s on battery), being able to use your computer as a charging station regardless of its power state is a clever idea.

Your smart phone and other portable electronics are thirsting for power. With your Satellite Pro M300 laptop Series you can quench them easily, even when the machine is asleep or even off. Just plug them into any one of three Sleep–and–Charge ports and watch for full bars.

The Satellite Pro M300 has a standard 86-key US keyboard, a TouchPad and two mouse buttons. The keyboard feels good when typing and the touchpad and mouse buttons are large and easy to use. Curiously, the M300 as a business-oriented notebook doesn’t have a fingerprint reader while the U405 consumer notebook does. The stereo speakers live above the keyboard and the system LED lights live on the front right corner below the keyboard. Like the Satellite U405, the M300 has a wireless radio on/off slider on the front of the notebook, but no consumer IR port.
