Ultra-portable: The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-1211 netbook weighs in at just 2.8 pounds and is ready to travel. This model features the Intel Atom processor to give you enough computing power to surf the Web, takes notes in class and enjoy music or an occasional movie. This netbook is easy to carry in a purse or backpack so you can enjoy the Internet without having to haul a heavy, full-size laptop around.

Intel Atom processor: This model features the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor. This small, low-power processor is efficient and secure. It’s designed to extend the digital lifestyle by combining performance with low-power consumption and efficient heat dissipation.

  • This netbook features 1GB of DDR2 system memory—enough to handle everyday computing needs. DDR2 is slightly faster than DDR, the previous standard in system memory.
  • Data travels to the processor along the frontside bus. The faster data travels, the faster everything works. This 533MHz frontside bus keeps data moving quickly.
  • Processors search for the same data over and over. L2 caches keep this data neat, organized, and nearby so it can be retrieved more quickly. This 512KB cache gives the processor a boost.

Hard drive: This hard drive features a 160GB capacity—enough storage space for the average user. This drive’s data disks spin at 5400rpm. The faster they spin, the faster the data is read and written.

Versatile wireless: Built-in 802.11bg wireless LAN lets you connect in almost any airport lounge, café or public hotspot.

10.2" display: This netbook features a 10.2" display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with SP2: This netbook runs Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP works smoothly with your older programs, while taking up very little of your netbook’s valuable memory.

Built-in camera/mic: Stay connected to family, friends or business associates wherever you go. Video chatting face-to-face is easy with the built-in 1.3-megapixel camera and microphone.

Software bundle:
Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, Microsoft Windows Live Tool Bar
Norton Internet Security 2008 (90 days of virus definition)
Lenovo OneKey Rescue System
Adobe Reader 8.0

The 1.6-GHz Intel Atom N270 is a wise choice as well, as it is the fastest and most energy-efficient netbook processor. HP’s VIA processor, on the other hand, runs warm and isn’t as fast. This configuration comes with 1GB of memory, and you get one choice for an operating system: Windows XP Home Edition. (A Linux version is available overseas.) Because it runs a Windows OS, I was able to run a suite of benchmark tests that won’t run on a Linux configuration. The S10’s SYSmark 2007 Preview Overall score of 39 suggests that this laptop is fine for office tasks, Web browsing, and light photo editing, even if it is 2 percent lower than that of the Wind.

The IdealPad S10 booted up into Windows just like any regular laptop. The first thing that came up after booting was Norton Internet Security. Knowing that this kind of software usually have a trail period, I canceled out and uninstalled it. Then I configured the wireless to connect onto my WiFi network. Installed Firefox, spybot, AVG free, and skpye. Since my mother-in-law is only using this netbook to browse the web and video-chat with remote family and friends, I’m already done with my installs. Though out the process, I was surprised on how fast this little guy is. It felt just as quick as my Centrino Sony laptop and my Dell desktop as it rips through the installs one at a time. The LCD can be very bright and has great viewing angels.

The S9 features an 8.9 inch screen, integrated 802.11g Wi-Fi, 512MB of memory, 80GB of hard disk space or a 4GB solid state drive (SSD), and is built around Intel’s 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 chip. The more expensive S10 features a 10.2 inch screen, 1GB of RAM and a larger 160GB hard disk. Users can choose from Linux or the supposedly extinct Windows XP.

The keyboard on the IdeaPad S10 is less cramped than what we’ve seen on most 7-inch and 8.9-inch netbooks, but the S10 keyboard is still extremely compact. Most touch typists will probably need some time to figure out proper finger placement on the keyboard in order to avoid making typos. Again, this is nothing new for netbooks, which usually require you to use a "hunt and peck" style of typing rather than traditional touch typing methods. Bottom line, this keyboard isn’t designed to be used as a primary/main computer. For users who are considering the S10 as their "main computer" in their home or office, a full-size external keyboard and external mouse are recommended.

The touchpad measures a small 2.3 x 1.5 inches, but its rough, grip-friendly surface allowed us to make precise movements easily. Using the pad’s multi-touch functionality, we were able to easily zoom in on and out of Web pages in Internet Explorer 7, and on photos in Windows Photo Viewer, just by bringing our fingers together or moving them apart.
