Let’s face it, the only real difference between a mobile workstation and gaming notebook has been the sticker and GPU drivers. Lenovo’s ground-breaking W700 changes that with a slew of features that truly make it worthy of being called a workstation notebook. But it’s not just about the W700’s 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme Q9300 quad core or its Quadro FX 3700M with 1GB frame buffer alone.

Lenovo makes good use of the W700’s spacious deck. The classic ThinkPad keyboard is roomy and comfortable and has a separate numerical keypad to the right. Long-time ThinkPad fans can enjoy the familiar pointing stick or opt to use the touchpad for cursor control. Both are responsive and easy to reach without having to adjust your typing position.

The W700’s wide-gamut display covers a claimed 72 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, a significant improvement over your typical laptop LCD. Nonetheless, Lenovo’s decision to use a twisted nematic (TN) panel in the W700 rather than an in-plane switching variant as is the standard in professional desktop applications has been cause for concern; hence, I spent a fair bit of time pushing the display to determine where its limits were – and to see just how much of this might really impact a photographic workflow.

The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation takes innovation to a new level with a built-in palm rest digitizer and color calibrator. Designed for digital content creators and users, the mobile workstation’s digitizer helps them easily configure an image, either mapping it to the entire screen or to an area defined by the user. Workstation users, especially photographers will benefit from the built-in color calibrator as color continues to play an important role in their work. The calibrator automatically adjusts the display’s color up to four times a month to help provide the most accurate, true-to-life images.

Some may assume that Lenovo is taking a brute-force approach to the mobile workstation market, but this is clearly not the case with the W700. Helping to refine this model are options for ultra-high resolution displays, optional hardware display color calibration (a Lenovo first), and an optional Wacom digitizer (another Lenovo first), all of which clearly show that Lenovo has the right frame of mind when attacking the mobile workstation market. In terms of its specification, the Thinkpad W700 looks very impressive - and we were lucky enough to get our hands on one of the first shipping models, which we will now analyze in great depth on the following pages.
