The business-oriented Toshiba Portege M700 borrows and improves upon features found on the company’s lighter and more expensive flagship Tablet PC, the Portege R400. For example, the Portege M700 incorporates the same useful display anchors, which keep the screen from wobbling, that we first saw on the R400. The Portege M700 also borrows the 12.1-inch backlit-LED display of the R400, but adds support for both active and passive inputs–that is, input from the included stylus or from your finger. These two features may seem insignificant, but they are indicative of the thoughtful design that puts the Portege M700 ahead of many business tablets we’ve seen over the years.

The exterior of the M700 is rather subdued compared to other laptop designs. If you don’t mind a buttoned-down gray-and-black color scheme, it should suit you just fine, and the clear-coat finish adds a bit of richness to an otherwise unremarkable look. What concerns us more is the relative heft of the chassis: A notebook with just a 12.1-inch screen has the potential to be a svelte traveling companion (say, an inch thick and 4 pounds), but the M700 is 1.5 inches thick and weighs about 5 pounds. That bulk is especially noticeable in tablet mode, where the unit gets uncomfortable in the crook of your arm in short order.

The 12.1" (1280 x 800 resolution) LED backlight display is very nice. The M700 has one of the best screens I have seen on a tablet. There isn’t much graininess and the colors are vivid. It reminds me of Fujitsu’s T4220 display, very bright and colorful. The LED backlight display has another advantage though, it saves on battery life. The viewing angles could be better, but overall a nice screen.

Weighing 4.6 pounds, the black and titanium-silver M700-S7002 is far lighter than it appears and feels comfortable when held in the crook of your arm in tablet mode. At 1.6 inches thick, it’s a little chunky for our tastes, but the 12.0 x 9.4-inch footprint makes it small enough for easy portability. The keyboard is spacious enough to enable comfortable touch typing, but the touchpad is on the small side.

The M700 is a solid tablet. You get what you see with it. There isn’t anything fancy, just a minimalistic design with all the necessities. The silver body protects a great LED backlight screen that has both a touchscreen and active digitizer and it doesn’t lack in performance or features. The hinge is definitely an added bonus because it locks the screen in place and gets rid of any wobble. Business professionals and college students should enjoy taking notes and giving presentations with the M700, especially considering it has such an affordable starting price.

Despite running a powerful processor, the M700 was able to curtail energy usage, per my readings with a PS3 International Kill-A-Watt meter. In idle state, it used 12 watts—2W below Energy Star 4.0 requirements and very impressive for a tablet with this kind of horsepower. It consumed as little energy as the HP Compaq 2710p, which runs on an ultra-low-voltage processor. Furthermore, with environmental certifications piled on, such as Energy Star 4.0, EPEAT Gold, and RoHS, the M700-S7002 merits our PC Magazine GreenTech Approved seal.
