The Dell Inspiron Mini 9, also called the Inspiron 910, is a netbook set to contend with other low cost ultra-portables such as the EeePC and Aspire One. Dell’s addition to the subnotebook market began shipments on September 16th, 2008 starting at $349. It is built by Compal Electronics who also makes the MSI Wind and the HP mininote 2133.
image It features an 8.9 inch WSVGA(1024×600) widescreen display running on a 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom Diamondville CPU. In the US it has 512 or 1024MB of RAM, 4, 8, or 16GB of SSD Storage and it comes with either its Netbook Remix version of Ubuntu Linux or Windows XP Home ULCPC Edition with Service Pack 3. In the UK, the XP model comes with a 16GB SSD whilst the Ubuntu model comes with 8GB. Both models are currently only available with 1024MB of RAM. In Australia, the only current option is XP with the 16GB SSD and 1GB RAM.
For connectivity the device carries WiFi, and 3 USB ports. In the US an optional 0.3 or 1.3 MP webcam and internal bluetooth is available as an option. In the UK a 1.3 MP webcam comes as standard in the XP model, whilst the Ubuntu spec has both options available at no additional cost. Bluetooth is also standard. In Australia, only one model is currently available and includes both the 1.3 MP webcam and Bluetooth as standard. The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is 1-1.22 inches thick and weighs 1.035 kg.(2.28 lbs)

The glossy black Inspiron Mini 9 (also available in white) we tested—despite its $399 price tag—looks and feels far from cheap. As with the Acer Aspire one and the ASUS Eee PC 901, the Inspiron Mini 9’s rounded lid sports a glossy finish that attracts light fingerprints and smudges. The classy look extends under the hood with a smooth-coated, silver palm rest and screen bezel.

The Inspiron Mini 9 is designed to keep you connected to your favorite entertainment. When you are on the go, you can still have access to email, shopping4, and more. A bright 8.9-inch glossy LED display (1024×600) presents most websites without a lot of left-right scrolling, and the keypads are large and easy to navigate.

As for its feature set, the Mini 9 is on a par with its peers: It has three USB ports, a 4-in-1 media card reader (SD, MS, MS Pro, MMC), VGA-out, an Ethernet port, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. The one place where I felt Dell went awry is in opting for an 8GB solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a spinning hard drive. Capacities for SSDs are still too low and prices too high, and when you put Windows XP Home on an 8GB flash drive it leaves little room for anything else. Granted, there is a 16GB option ($40), but it pales in comparison with the Wind’s and HP Mini-Note’s 80GB capacities. Even ASUS realized the limitations of the 4GB SSD in its original Eee PC and added a second, 16GB module to the EeePC 900 for a total of 20GB.

The build quality of the Mini 9 is amazingly solid for a subnotebook of this size and weight. The construction is mostly plastic but all of the plastics feel strong enough to handle being tossed around inside a bookbag. Even the glossy plastic surfaces seem to resist minor surface scratches. However, the most impressive build quality element in our pre-production unit was that the inside of the chassis is reinforced with magnesium alloy in at least one location (behind the keyboard and in front of the battery). This helps the Mini 9 withstand much more abuse than a typical all-plastic netbook.

Component-wise, the Mini 9 is similar to other recent netbooks, such as the Eee PC 901 and the Acer Aspire One, and includes Intel’s Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 16GB solid-state hard drive and Windows XP. Our American cousins can knock the price down by opting for a smaller hard drive, less RAM, no webcam or using Ubuntu Linux OS. We don’t get any customisation options in the UK, which is unusual for Dell.
