The Dell Latitude E6400, the update to the D630, packs in all the essentials needed to keep road warriors productive on the go: a speedy Intel Core 2 Duo processor, long battery life, and a host of security and durability features. Factor in the revamped design, which replaces its predecessor’s stodgy aesthetic for one that’s much more streamlined and visually appealing, and you have an excellent notebook for demanding business users.

Dell has made a few practical changes to the design too. The red ‘Task Lights’ of the Latitude D630 ATG, which served to illuminate the keyboard in low-light situations, have been supplanted by a backlit keyboard. Matched with a sensor to dynamically alter the screen brightness, it makes for a laptop that remains usable even in the gloomiest of environments.

The Latitude E6400 enclosure is approximately the same size and weight as the Latitude D630 it replaces. However, it (along with all of Dell’s E-series Latitudes) has a completely new brushed black and aluminum look and feel. The E6400 is far more solid feeling than the D630, with full-frame magnesium alloy construction and all-metal hinges. Its absolute minimum weight is 4.3 pounds, but this is with a Travel Lite placeholder in the modular media bay. A far more likely weight range is 4.9 to 5.6 pounds, with the weight mostly dependent on battery size and somewhat dependent on optical drive choice.

The matte WXGA+ (1440×900) screen on the Dell Latitude E6400 is absolutely beautiful. No dead pixels were found during testing, and backlight bleed while noticed on some dark screens was minimal. Colors were vibrant despite the matte screen and the additional benefit of matte screens is the lack of reflection in an office environment. Wide viewing angles made the screen look sharp even at oddly contorted angles. Backlight adjustment was very broad, allowing me to adjust low enough for darker room settings, and bright enough to still be readable in sunlight or a bright office.

The 14.1-inch widescreen display has a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels, but this can be upgraded to a 1,440 x 900-pixel LED-backlit screen which is brighter and sharper. Based on the latest Centrino 2 platform, the display is powered by an integrated Intel GMA 4500HD processor, though there is an option to boost the graphics capability to a discrete Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M1 chip with 256MB of video RAM.

Hard drive options are copious. You can get normal 5,400rpm SATA HDDs in 80GB, 120GB and 160GB capacities as well as 80GB and 120GB capacities that come pre-encrypted. You can also get 7,200rpm drives ranging from 80GB all the way up to 250GB and all with Free Fall Sensors, though as yet there are no SSD options to choose from. In addition to all this, you can specify custom hard drive partitioning. As standard you get integrated Intel GMA X4500HD graphics, but discrete nVidia Quadro 160M graphics with 256MB of memory is available as well. You can also choose whether to have ExpressCard slots or PC Card slots, which is handy if you use legacy PC Card devices such as HSDPA modems.
