Plain and without ornaments. This is the way the 36.1 cm x 26.5 cm x 4.4 cm Lenovo 3000 N200 looks like. Also the design of the lid is simple, silver instead of being glossy. However, the silver surface is rather sensitive to scratches and does not appear to be of high quality. So, you should take care, whenever you put this notebook into a bag.

The N200 is a very solid laptop with minimalistic design features. The basic silver paintjob and dark grey plastic inside don’t automatically stick out from the crowd in terms of looks. Where it really shines is build quality, ease of upgrading, and solid Thinkpad geared keyboard. The screen hinges are very solid … which you would expect from the company that brings you the very durable ThinkPad business line. The screen latches hold the lid down very firmly by keeping a bit of tension on the rubber guards placed around the screen edges. The chassis is very nice and produces no plastic squeaks or creaks when you lift it up. The entire area around and below the keyboard is supported very well with little or no flex under pressure. Pressing firmly along all parts of the keyboard shows no sign of weakness or give.

The Lenovo 3000 N200 can be configured with either a 14.1-inch or 15.4-inch wide-aspect display. Our test unit featured the 15.4-inch wide screen with a sharp 1,680×1,050 (WSXGA) native resolution. We couldn’t get over how expansive the screen seemed, providing adequate room for working in spreadsheets and word processor documents as well as a beautiful canvas for movies. While buyers can opt for an antiglare finish on the 14.1-inch version of the N200, all 15.4-inch models include a glossy, video-friendly finish; fortunately, we had no trouble with annoying reflections in our typical office environment.

The N200s business credentials are further emphasised by the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner below and to the right of the keyboard. This works in conjunction with preloaded software enabling you to swipe your finger to log into Windows or enter a password on a website. For someone like me, that has used the same few passwords for years, this seem like overkill but if you’re company policy is to regularly change passwords they can save a lot of support calls about forgotten passwords.

At 6.2 pounds, the N200 is best suited for occasional travel rather than as a companion for your daily commute. The notebook’s silver-and-black chassis is appropriate for corporate settings, but its design looks dated, and its plastic casing feels cheap. We didn’t mind this case when it appeared on the more budget-minded Lenovo 3000 N100, but we wish Lenovo had clad the N200 in a classier chassis that more fell in line with the eye-catching designs we’ve seen from other laptops in its midrange price strata, like the HP Pavilion DV2500t and Lenovo’s own boardroom-ready black ThinkPad R61.

The same engineers that brought you the legendary keyboard design on ThinkPad® notebooks now give you great tactile feel with intelligent layout and performance on N Series notebooks. Thoughtfully designed, the keyboard has specialized keys and buttons for easy access to the presentation director application and Lenovo CareSM tools, as well as multimedia controls for stop, play, forward, rewind and pause.
