Measuring 1.46 inches at its thickest point, the VAIO FW isn’t as svelte as an Apple MacBook Pro; still, the silver-and-black chassis looks sharp, blending angles and curves in a pleasing way. Open the latchless lid and you’ll find an uncluttered keyboard deck, with the comfortable Sony flat-top keyboard set into a plain silver deck. Unlike other “luxury” portables, however, the palm rest has a decidedly plastic feel, but we are happy to see an oversize touchpad to match the large screen. Alas, the mouse buttons on our early production model were a bit loud and likely to annoy others if you’re in a quiet room.

This VAIO also turned in solid gaming scores; its dedicated video card, the 256MB Radeon HD 3470, topped out at 83 frames per second in Far Cry (with antialiasing turned off). Just resist the temptation to use every bit of the beautiful 16-inch display. Most gaming on this notebook probably shouldn’t go much higher than a 1024-by-768-pixel resolution.

It’s powered by the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 processor, which offers a light-speed 1066 MHz front-side bus speed and 6 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel’s 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. Other features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximizing capacity), ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphics with up to 1530 MB of available memory, ExpressCard 34 slot, quad-mode Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth connectivity (including stereo music streaming), a 1.3-megapixel webcam built into the bezel, both Memory Stick and SD card readers, and pre-installed Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1).

This laptop is built well to handle heat. After gaming for about 30 minutes, the laptop was still cool. It doesn’t get very hot at all, and is probably one of the very good things about Sony’s engineering. When not reading a disc, this laptop is silent as if not even on. When it reads a disc, however, it gets very loud for a brief 3 to 5 seconds. The fans are fairly silent when gaming, too. Heat and noise wise, it is a very well engineered machine.

Of course, with great power comes an even greater battery drain. The Sony VAIO VGN-FW198U/H lasted only 2 hours, 32 minutes in our tests. That’s about 30 minutes less than we’re accustomed to seeing in all-purpose notebooks - or in power-sucking desktop replacements, for that matter.
