This model incorporates many of those suggestions. However, in spite of its Atom processor, the Mini 1000 slips a little toward the back of the pack. Of course, I’ve learned to keep lowered expectations for netbooks–the average WorldBench score for the category hovers around 35. HP’s Mini 1000 eked out a 30. So, while it’s not nearly as speedy as Lenovo’s IdeaPad S10 (which earned a 41), the Mini 1000 also is notably faster than both Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9(which crawled across the finish line posting a 25) and the original HP 2133, which scored a poky 23.

With the included three-cell battery, the Mini 1000 lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes playing back an MPEG-4 movie. Although lighter usage, such as writing and browsing the Web, stretched that to around 2 hours and 40 minutes, road warriors will definitely want to consider the upcoming six-cell battery option. The Mini uses standard Windows power profiles to manage power; there’s no power-management utility to toggle the processor manually to a slower speed to save battery life, as you find on most other Atom netbooks.

The Mini 1000’s footprint is nearly identical to that of the earlier HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, measuring slightly wider and thinner. It’s also a little lighter, thanks to the switch from aluminum to plastic. Netbooks are designed with price and portability in mind, so they’re usually not the fanciest designs to come out of a PC maker’s lab. While an aluminum chassis is generally preferred to one made from plastic, the switch to plastic here makes sense because every penny and ounce counts. Overall, we appreciate the Mini 1000’s efficient and attractive layout–there’s hardly any dead space on the keyboard tray.

The system measures 10.3 by 6.6 by 0.9 inches, about the dimensions of the Acer One. It’s as wide as the Lenovo S10 but isn’t as deep, and there’s a reason for that. Like the original Mini-Note and the Acer One, the mouse buttons are adjacent to the touchpad. This allows HP to eliminate the area where traditional mouse buttons would normally sit, but it also makes for an awkward navigating experience. Most of the time, I used both my left and right index fingers to surf.

The keys on the Mini 1000 lack the 2133’s DuraFinish, which made the keys resistant to visible wear and tear, a cost-cutting move. However, the matte black keys on the Mini 1000 are still softer to the touch than those found on its rivals. They each had pretty good tactile feedback, and the panel had no bend or flex. The only keyboard that can hold a candle to HP’s is that of Samsung’s NC10. Some of its keys aren’t as large as the Mini 1000’s, but some may prefer their chunkier feel.

The overall build is pure quality, and we can’t emphasize enough how important it is for a computer, especially a small, super-portable computer, not to feel like a toy in your hands. This puppy weighs 2.4 pounds in the 10.2-inch configuration, and hardly flexes a millimeter, with a solid screen, hinge and body. It’s only slightly less than one inch thick, which is bested handily by the Eee PC S101, but the shrunk-to-fit 16:10 form factor means that "clutch" moniker is more than just marketing speak, it’s a whole new way to carry your laptop, and we find it to be plenty small.
