It is inside of the machine that makes the X301 so interesting though. The first change from the X300 to the X301 is the use of a new processor, the 1.4GHz SU9400. This processor is physically smaller than other chips in its class and reduces power consumption and heat output to a bare minimum. Another big change from the X300 is soon you will be able to have a 128GB SSD instead of the standard 64GB model. The drives are not quite ready yet, and they’ll be an expensive upgrade (as if the 64GB model was not expensive enough), but if you need storage and price is not an issue this is about as good as it gets. Other features inside the box include a/g/n WiFi, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, 2GB DDR3 RAM, GPS, and AT&T mobile broadband.

When Lenovo launched the ThinkPad X300 earlier this year, we praised the system for its razor-thin design, excellent keyboard, and sturdy, yet lightweight, build. Its update, the ThinkPad X301, keeps everything we loved about its predecessor, adding Intel’s Centrino 2 platform (which is touted as offering 20 percent faster performance), DisplayPort, and a speedy 64GB solid state drive. You’ll pay a premium for the X301 (our configuration comes in at just under $3,000), but if a no-compromise business notebook is what you need, you won’t be disappointed. We just wish that it had an hour or two more of battery life.

In addition to the keyboard light, the ThinkPad X301’s display bezel includes a 1.3-megapixel Webcam and a noise-canceling digital microphone for Web conferencing. The matte-finish display itself features a 1,440×900 native resolution that’s sharper than that of the MacBook Air and other similar-size screens, resulting in text and icons that are a bit smaller than you’d expect. So far the sharper resolution hasn’t caused tremendous problems, though we did find ourselves pumping up the font size on a newspaper’s Web site so we could read a lengthy article. We also zoomed in a bit when working on documents and spreadsheets. The trade-off: more screen real estate for multitasking and, when it’s time for a break, beautiful video.

The ThinkPad X301 is as solid as you get in terms of build quality. The internal chassis and roll cage use an advanced carbon-fiber / glass-fiber material that provides both strength and light weight. The case material is made of magnesium, press as hard as you want anywhere on the body of the notebook and it will not flex. Like all ThinkPads, the X301 is designed for accidental abuse and drops. The screen is held down using a latch mechanism with button release, something that’s more and more rare these days with notebooks as most other manufacturers move to a latchless design.

You won’t associate raw horsepower with the X301. Its new ultra-low-voltage (ULV) processor isn’t as speedy as the standard-voltage ones found on the MacBook Air and the Envy 133. But because it’s running on an Intel Centrino 2 platform, the new processor takes advantage of the fast (1,066-MHz) front-side bus (FSB), up-to-date integrated graphics, and 2GB of DDR3 memory. It won’t be long before the MacBook Air and the Envy 133 move to faster parts as well, presumably sticking with standard voltage.

The ThinkPad X301 notebook also continues Lenovo’s focus on environmentally-responsible design. Its 13.3-inch LED backlit display, solid state drive storage and other energy-efficient technologies help make it rated Gold by the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. This designation adds to Lenovo’s portfolio of Gold-rated ThinkPad notebook and ThinkCentre desktop PCs.
