Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is a standard netbook - 1.6GHz Atom, smallish 40, 60 or 80GB hard drive, not a whole lotta RAM—though you’ve got a full-sized keyboard and 1280×800 12-inch screen. It’s only available with Vista at launch.

With a starting weight of only 2.72 lbs.1 and only 0.92 in. thick1, current standard features on the Inspiron Mini 12 include:

1. Windows Vista® Home Basic, built-in webcam, 1GB of RAM and a choice of 60 GB or 80 GB hard drive1, providing ample capacity for mobile applications, content creation and storage.
2. Built-in Bluetooth® and 802.11b/g wireless.
3. A sharp 12.1-inch WXGA display, offering wider viewing angles and exceptional brightness.
4. Dell provides a variety of service offerings and add-on options to help ensure devices are easy to use and maintain optimal performance, including:
5. Dell Support Center: Quickly access Dell service and support from an icon on your desktop that provides automated fixes, software upgrades and tools to help keep your system up-to-date and running efficiently.
6. DellConnect™ Remote Assistance1: Dell experts help diagnose and solve PC problems via an Internet connection (available only on Windows-based systems).

The Dell Inspirion Mini 12 is definitely an interesting mutant of netbook and notebook that might hit some heretofore undiscovered sweet spot, or simply look very attractive to some given the current economic climate.

The Dell Mini’s 12-inch screen runs at a native resolution of 1,280×800, and is driven by Intel’s integrated GMA 500 graphics chipset. The guts of the machine consist of an Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz processor — which is actually slower than the one on the Mini 9 — a gigabyte of RAM and an 80GB PATA drive (not solid state). It’s also quite light at 1.24 kilograms.

The extended battery protrudes from the bottom of the system, raising the back of the Inspiron Mini 12 slightly; when sitting on a desk, it sets the keyboard at a comfortable angle for typing. The bulk of the Mini 12’s weight is positioned toward the hinge; as a result, when the three-cell battery (which sits flush) is inserted, the notebook has a tendency to tip backwards when resting on a lap and balance on its hinge.

Dell tells us that 3G will be available on both the Mini 12 and Mini 9 in early 2009. Help files on the Mini 12 identified the card as ‘Dell Wireless 5330’, which is produced by Ericsson and includes a GPS receiver along with 7.2Mbps downlink and 2.0Mbs uplink on the 2.1GHz, 1.9GHz and 850MHz bands (so both our 3G and Next G services are covered).
