Lenovo designed its “U” series to be all about expressing ideas with style. The IdeaPad U330 notebook is a super-slim ultra-light addition to the widely-acclaimed IdeaPad U110 notebook. Equipped with the version of VeriFace facial recognition technology, consumers can now access encrypted files and to record a 30-second video message for others users. Designed with Dolby Home Theater and touch-sensitive multimedia controls, the notebook comes equipped with HDMI. The IdeaPad U330 notebook also comes with switchable graphics.

This enables the user to run energy-efficient integrated graphics while on battery power and then switch to high-definition discrete graphics for more powerful performance when “plugged in.” The notebook also offers an LED backlit display, five hours of battery life and Lenovo’s Active Protection System (APS), a feature pioneered on ThinkPad notebooks. Lenovo’s APS technology helps protect the data on the hard drive if the notebook should fall. And if the operating system should crash, users can recover their data at the touch of a button with the One-Key Rescue System.

Measuring 12.5 x 9.3 x 0.9 inches and weighing 4.4 pounds, the U330 provides excellent balance between screen size and portability, with a heaping dose of eye candy. The machine features a glossy Bold Black lid and a subtle pinstripe pattern on its base that begs to be touched. Unfortunately, doing so leaves behind a fair share of fingerprints, so you may want to keep a cloth at hand if you want to maintain its pristine appearance.

A thin-and-light laptop computer offers the optimal combination of portability, performance, features, and cost. Power-tuned mobile processors deliver enough power to keep you working smoothly, and unlike ultraportables, most thin-and-light laptops have a more reasonably sized keyboard and display, a larger hard drive, and a built-in optical drive. Yes, they’re more expensive than slightly larger, heavier mid-size laptops, but if you need maximum productivity in a portable package, this is the best choice.

The U330 has two speakers located across from the left and right hinges of the screen on the base of the notebook driven by a Realtek audio chipset. The sound does not become distorted at max volume. Yet like all other notebooks, bass is nonexistent and volume is weak despite the Dolby Home Theatre label on the speakers. The audio jack located on the front of the notebook does not suffer from interference from its internal components, providing good sound when connected to headphones or external speakers. Finally, a microphone array is located on the top of the screen with the webcam.
