Gateway’s MC7803u is one of the first notebooks in its MC series, a line emphasizing multimedia playback. The MC7803u has a 16-inch widescreen WXGA 1366 x 768 display in the proper 16:9 aspect ratio, rather than the 16:10 often found in notebooks. It runs an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 at 2.0GHz and comes configured with 4GB DDR2 memory. The system’s graphics are powered by a 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 chipset. Gateway also offers a MC7801u model, otherwise the same machine as the MC7803u, but with a less powerful Intel integrated graphics chip for fifty dollars less; both models support high definition video output over an HDMI connection.

Running Vista 64-bit, the notebook features a five-in-one flash card reader and multi-mode DVD burner supporting Label Flash, a technology to optically print text and graphics to label discs. For storage, the 7.1-pound system boasts a 320GB SATA hard drive. Connectivity options include a/g/draft-n WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, and four USB 2.0 ports. Burgundy and black case options are available, both featuring an illuminated keyboard and multimedia shortcut buttons, and either a brushed metal or faux leather palm rest.

Measuring 15.28 inches wide, 10.43 inches deep, and 1.7 inches thick at its widest portion, the machine really just doesn’t like to travel. It just barely fits into a standard Jansport backpack for transport, and we weren’t able to use the bag’s relatively generous notebook sleeve portion of the bag for it, either. The weight got to be a major inconvenience after carrying it along on a motorcycle for a few days, and we definitely can’t imagine walking far with it as cargo plus books and a few other items thrown in.

The MC7803u does not pretend to be a gaming rig, but the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 GPU (with 512MB of dedicated VRAM) delivers playable frame rates at lower resolutions. On F.E.A.R. with the resolution set to 1,024×768, we saw 47 frames per second (fps), and the machine managed 37.1fps at the same resolution on Company of Heroes. Upping the resolution and turning all the effects settings to high in Company of Heroes dropped the results to 10.2fps. That, combined with an unimpressive 3DMark06 score of 3,215 at 1,024×768, proves that this configuration is for casual gamers only.

This notebook’s 71-Wh battery is bigger than the HDX16t’s, which showed in the battery tests. MobileMark 2007 yielded a battery score of 2 hours 47 minutes—not great, but longer lasting than the HDX16t’s 2:8. You should get well over 3 hours of battery life by turning off the backlit keyboard.

Gateway has a long history of delivering powerful products at competitive prices, yet for the most part, design has been missing from its repertoire. Now Gateway has that, too—and at a good time, as the MC7803u now sits on retail shelves competing to catch the consumer’s eye.
