If you are looking for a notebook that won’t break the bank, the Gateway M-7818u has a well-rounded feature set despite the budget price. It comes in a stylish glossy Garnet Red chassis that gives it an expensive look. It weighs 6.3 pounds and ideal for occasional travel. It has a full-size silver keyboard a black frame. It has a 15.4-inch widescreen but has a resolution of only 1280 x 800-pixel. Despite the lower resolution when compared to pricier units, it delivered bright and vibrant images as well as popping colors.

It carries the typical ports that include an 8X multiformat dual-layer DVD burner, a 5-in-1 card reader, and an ExpressCard/54 slot. Unfortunately a Blu-ray drive is not an option. Benchmark scores are below the category average by more than 1,000 points. The processor’s limits were even more evident during multitasking tests. The reviewer noted that the integrated graphics card is decent for less-demanding 3D titles, but not for high-frame-rate action gaming. Wireless throughput was above average for the class, at 20.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 20.0 Mbps at 50 feet. The six-cell battery provided enough juice for 3 hours and 41 minutes of use. As long as you keep your expectations for a budget notebook realistic, the Gateway M-7818u.

The 6.2-pound M-7818u features an attractive Garnet Red lid sealed with Gateway’s inFuse finish, which protects it from the typical wear and tear of everyday use. The color extends to the wrist rest portion of the keyboard and eventually gives way to a brushed-metal finish that matches the silver keyboard. The keyboard has just the right amount of give without feeling too squishy, and the black touch pad is responsive and smooth.

The 1280 x 800-pixel resolution on the Gateway M-7818u’s 15.4-inch widescreen is lower than you’ll find on pricier units, but the panel was comfortable to work on and delivered a bright, vibrant image. Colors popped, and motion and color reproduction on our Pirates of the Caribbean DVD were excellent. The panel’s horizontal viewing angle was wide, although looking at the screen from above showed a brightness shift.

Design of Gateway M-7818u is eye-catching and attractive. You will find Glossy Garnet Red lid sealed with its exclusive inFuse finish, to guard it from daily wear and tear. Beyond its flashy coat, M-7818u is clunker and the color moves to wrist rest part of keyboard and final touch has brushed-metal finish, which is compatible with silver keyboard. The black touch pad looks superb and open, however backlit is missing.
